May You Rest and Sleep

May You Rest and Sleep

Did you know that a third of your life is spent sleeping? And did you know that the amount of energy saved every time you sleep is so unsubstantial? Getting the regular eight hours of sleep only amounts to about 50 kilocalories, or what is equivalent to the energy that can be had for eating a piece of toast. If that is the case, what then is the fuss about getting enough sleep for our body to have a chance to recharge and recuperate from its daily activities?

“Why do we sleep?” is a question that has eluded many scientists and researchers. They still cannot give a definite answer as to why we sleep. All they could offer is that sleep is essential in maintaining our brains’ normal and healthy function. We have to sleep to develop normal levels of cognitive skills such as speech, memory, and innovative and flexible thinking.

A better way to understand the significance of sleep would be to ask, “What happens if we don’t sleep?” We can come up with several answers to this question based on our very own experiences.

Lack of Sleep

Most people exhibit unpleasant behavior such as being sluggish, irritable, moody, and forgetful when they don’t get enough sleep. Lack of sleep has severe effects on our brain functions. Sleep deprivation results in the inability to focus and concentrate or having a shorter attention span than when we are fully rested. Inadequacy of sleep impairs certain parts of the brain responsible for controlling our cognitive functions, our ability to respond to stimuli, in making decisions and rational judgments.
But lack of sleep is not only a matter of having an “off day,” being irritable, or lacking energy.
Who would have thought that lack of sleep could contribute to several disastrous events such as the Chornobyl Nuclear Tragedy and the Challenger Shuttle Explosion?
When taken to the extreme, sleep deprivation can lead to human error and catastrophic consequences.

Sleep Disorder

Sleep deprivation weakens or slows down our cognitive functions. As a result, it poses severe risks to our mental, emotional and physical health.

But what causes lack of sleep in the first place?

Disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea have been the leading causes of sleep deprivation. In addition, these conditions have been associated with stress, obesity, and high blood pressure.

Sleeping Pills

Due to the severe consequences of sleep deprivation, equally challenging thought should be given to the need to manage our sleeping habits and the various factors influencing our bedtime behavior. Once you have exhausted all means and tips to get a good night’s sleep, such as avoiding caffeine and daytime naps or relaxing before bedtime — you may need to take another step, this time, towards the option of medication. If sleep remains elusive despite the dozens of techniques you’ve used, taking sleeping pills may already be a good option for you to consider. Sleeping pills are sedative drugs used to relieve anxiety, stress, depression, and even muscle tension by slowing down the central nervous system. This medication is nothing new and dates back many centuries when opiate laudanum, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and non-benzodiazepines were introduced. There are several over-the-counter sleeping pills available on the market. These medications may not carry the same drug dependency, and sleeping pill overdose risks as other products released decades ago. However, certain medical conditions such as liver and kidney problems may have adverse reactions to the current crop of sleep-inducing drugs. In addition, frequency of use may influence the effectiveness of the medication. Therefore, caution and proper consultation with a physician are strongly advised. Some side effects of sleeping pills are dizziness and prolonged drowsiness. It may also cause dry mouth, severe allergic reaction, facial swelling, lightheadedness, abdominal pain, rash, nausea, vomiting, depression, reduced interest in sex, chest pain, sleep-driving, over-eating, blurred vision, and low blood pressure.
All of us deserve to find quality rest that only sleep can provide. The easiest way to start getting that rest is by sticking to a regular sleeping habit and practicing a healthy lifestyle. Living a good life is not just about the fun and excitement of activities done while you are awake. Living a good life also means having enough time in the sack.

What to Do When You Are Alone for the Holidays

What to Do When You Are Alone for the Holidays

Being alone for the holidays is a significant challenge for many people. Holidays often conjure family images, warmth, and sharing of a particular time. However, loneliness can be overwhelming when you have no one to share your holiday time.

Many people, however, miss the point of what holidays are really about and what makes them unique. Holidays are not about what you GET – they are about what you GIVE. Many people are under the misconception that the joy of the holidays is about what you receive rather than about what you share. Our hearts get filled with love when we give and share passion rather than from getting love.

This may seem like a paradox. So many people spend their time with others attempting to get love, attention, and approval, thinking that this is what makes them feel happy and worthy. But getting attention from others to fill ourselves is like eating chocolate when you are lonely – it works for the moment, but then you need more and more. Eventually, it becomes an addiction.

What fills the emptiness is the giving of love. So if you are alone over the holidays, the question becomes, “How can I give love in ways that will bring me joy?”

Below are some suggestions for sharing your love and caring over the holidays:

* Gather toys from friends and store donations and bring them to children who would not otherwise have toys. You can find these children through schools, churches, and other organizations.

* Find a women’s shelter in your area and help create the holiday there – preparing food, decorating the tree, and spending time with them. Last year a friend of mine organized a number of her local markets to donate food over Christmas to the local shelter that housed mothers and their children who had left abusive husbands. She got to know the mothers and children and received great fulfillment in providing them with an abundant Christmas.

* Spend time with older adults in nursing homes, especially those with no family. Spending time caring about another lonely person will go a long way toward taking away your loneliness!

* Volunteer to help serve food to the needy over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many churches and other charitable organizations welcome volunteers to help in food lines over the holidays.

* Locate a retreat center near you with a special event over the holidays and share your time with other people who are also alone for the holidays. For example, last year, a friend of mine, who had just left her husband and was alone for the first time with no family around her, went to a beautiful retreat center on the East Coast. Twenty people gathered there to share Thanksgiving. There was a wonderful ceremony of gratitude that she said filled her heart. In addition, she enjoyed sharing time with new people.

* Find a church, temple, or 12-step group in your area with special events for singles over the holidays. Go to these events to share your caring with others, which you can do just by being interested in listening to another person. We all love being listened to and understood, and all of us can give this to another.

One of my all-time favorite movies is “A Christmas Carol” – the one starring Alistair Sim. I love the scene on Christmas morning when Scrooge realizes that no time has passed and he has the opportunity to give. He feels such joy at the prospect of showing that he can hardly stand it! He dances around and stands on his head and laughs and laughs with the joy of giving! One night, he went from being a miserable older man concerned only with getting to a man now focused only on giving, and he became a joyful person.

While you might not have money to give, we all have caring to give. You have no idea how much you might enrich your own life and another person’s life just by giving your time, attention, interest, smile, and understanding. Whatever your life circumstances, you always have the opportunity to provide your care. You will discover that sharing your caring with others, especially over the holidays, is a profound way of caring about yourself.

Work those inner muscles out Exercise cures for snoring

Work those inner muscles out. Exercise cures snoring.

You know you snore.
Someone has told you that you do.
And you’ve desperately been scouring for any possible cure for your snoring. But, before finding any solution, you need to get to the bottom of why snore – it’s a standard operating procedure, and that’s how science experiments become successful. Snoring is primarily caused by having an obstruction in the air passage. This obstruction causes air to vibrate against the soft tissues, thus, producing the vibratory sound.

Five major types of obstructions that result in snoring

As people age, and even those who inherited an exceptionally oversized tongue, the tongue gets flabby. It drops backward during sleep, causing a partial or total block. On the other hand, the soft palate collapses or sags as the muscles around that area relax during sleep, causing a blockage. Obese people tend to snore more than those in their ideal weights because fats accumulated around the neck narrow the air passage. Exercise cures for the snoring of these types will be discussed below.

The anatomy of one’s nose is also a cause of snoring. For example, some people have a deviated septum (the cartilage dividing the nose), resulting in an uneven nasal passage that contributes to snoring.
Enlarged (or inflamed) tonsils and adenoids are also a factor in why people snore.

Exercise cures for snoring

Before dealing with the medical ways (not to mention expensive ways) and depending on what’s causing you to snore, it’s always rewarding to try the inexpensive home remedies for snoring first. In addition, there are several popular exercise cures for snoring.

To hold the soft palate in place during sleep, you may try these exercise cures for snoring.
This particular exercise will show you how to strengthen your muscles and clear your airways. Begin by putting your upper and lower molars together. Then open your mouth as wide as possible (but don’t stretch) with your molars pressed.
Repeat this exercise 10 to 20 times.
Also, pucker your lips and hold them in this position for 10 seconds and relax. In addition to these exercise cures for snoring, try spreading your lips into an exaggerated smile and saving for a few moments, then relax. You can also combine the last two exercise cures for snoring.

These tongue exercise cures for snoring might also help reduce your incidence of snoring.
Stick your tongue out straight ahead (make sure it doesn’t go sideways) and farther each day as you progress. Another tongue exercise cure for snoring can be done by sticking out your tongue the farthest you can and trying to reach out for your chin.

The important thing in these exercises cures for snoring is to work on the muscles around the throat area and the tongue so they don’t become saggy and cause an obstruction.
For anything else, like anatomical irregularities, ask for any advice from your doctor.

Excellent Tips for Healthy and Manageable Skin

Excellent Tips for Healthy and Manageable Skin

Skincare is a vast discipline that encompasses both the physical properties and appearance of the skin on your face and body. Suppose you have unanswered questions about the best way to protect, nourish, and care for your skin. In that case, the information in these tips is an excellent starting point.

Find your skin type, and afterward, find a skin care regime targeted for that type. Most skincare collections contain a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. Make sure to do each step in your new skin care regime twice a day for healthy, clean skin. By giving your skin proper daily attention, you’ll find it easier to notice changes in your skin.

Use a moisturizer at least two times a day. This will keep your skin soft and smooth. It would help if you were sure to use a lotion after you shower or bath. It would help if you also used a moisturizer before going to sleep at night because this is when your skin is best able to absorb moisturizer.

For long-lasting beauty, make sure to use a moisturizer with sunscreen at all times of the year. Even in the wintertime, the sun’s glare on the snow can damage your skin. Don’t rely on just moisturizer for a trip to the beach. Ensure you have absolute sunscreen with you whenever long exposure to the sun is necessary.

Apple cider vinegar can be a natural and effective treatment for acne. Use half apple cider vinegar and half water as your toner daily to help your skin maintain the proper pH balance. A proper pH is essential in keeping skin healthy and preventing acne breakouts.

Taking hot baths and showers feel good, but they aren’t perfect for your skin. Hot water can damage your skin. Tap water contains chlorine, which works to kill bacteria and can also cause skin damage. The more scalding the water, the more damage it can cause because the chemical reaction rates increase as the water temperature increases.

Avoid taking long, scalding baths or showers. The intense heat from the hot water and the prolonged exposure to water breaks down the lipid barriers in your skin, leading to moisture loss and dry, cracked skin. Lukewarm baths with added essential oils or short showers are much healthier options for your skin.

If you avoid sunscreen or moisturizer with sunscreen because of the texture, try applying it with a sponge instead. A sponge helps your skin absorb the moisturizer and sunscreen easier and frees your hands of any gooey messes. This way, you will have no excuse for skimping on sun protection.

To avoid acne, wash your hands before you touch your face. The oil and bacteria that you often have on your hands at any given moment during the day can easily clog the pores on your face. Washing your hands is a free and simple solution to stopping bothersome acne!

By applying the knowledge you have just gained from reading this article, you are taking a big step toward improving your life by improving how you care for your skin. In addition, you are sure to enjoy increased confidence in your skin’s overall appearance, texture, and health.

The Secret to Healthier Eating Is in the Oil

Whether you want to add a healthy flair to your cooking style or maintain your ideal weight for bathing-suit season, something as simple as preparing food with the right cooking oil can be a positive step toward good health.

It’s a common misconception that all fats and oils are bad for you. In fact, the right fats and oils provide an effective energy source for the body, as well as enhance the texture, taste and aroma of many foods.

While olive and canola oils have long been heralded as two of the healthiest cooking oils, a new alternative is available to cooks who have health at the forefront of their minds.

After becoming hugely popular in Japan, diacylglycerol (DAG) oil is now available in the United States under the Enova brand name and is clinically shown to help consumers maintain a healthy lifestyle when used as part of a sensible diet. DAG oil tastes much like other conventional cooking oils but when consumed, less is stored in the body as fat.

“Enova is made from all natural soy and canola oil, and since it is not a fat substitute, digestive disturbances are not expected,” said Mary Lee Chin, a registered dietitian. “More importantly, the oil has a light, mild taste and can be substituted for conventional cooking or salad oil in any cooking routine.”

Whatever oil you choose, follow these important tips.

* Choose oil with the greatest health benefits, such as the new DAG oil, canola, soy or olive oil. These oils are versatile and can be used for all types of recipes. Use these oils instead of butter or shortening for your recipes.

* A little oil goes a long way. One teaspoon of oil per person is adequate.

Reasons to get Health Insurance for the Family Feline

Because it appears as if felines never get ill, most people do not believe in purchasing pet health insurance for the family feline. The veterinary issue most cat owners stress over is what will occur if their family feline gets run over by a passing car or truck. Cat owners who keep their cats in your house do not stress over that. The fact is that there are lots of health problems that can cause the household feline to require to visit the family veterinarian, and most of them are costly. In the unusual events, cat owners discover themselves dealing with an emergency vet expense they want they had acquired a family pet health care policy for their feline.

When people think about cat allergies, they instantly assume you are talking about humans allergic to feline hair. They do not realize that felines can have allergic reactions all of their own that can pester them for the rest of their lives. Some cats struggle with inhalant allergic reactions; these are allergic reactions brought on by inhalant irritants that are airborne particles that irritate the breathing system. Inhalant allergies often make themselves apparent in asthma-like signs. Some felines who experience inhalant allergies will also have skin sores and experience loss of hair. Dusty kitty litters, pollen, fragrances, cleaning up sprays, deodorizers, dust, and smoke are all things your family feline may be allergic to.

The second kind of allergic reaction felines struggle with is called contact allergic reactions, which are triggered by physical contact with a substance that triggers a physical reaction (typically hives, swelling, and hair loss). Contact allergens a house feline may be exposed to are plants, carpet fresheners/cleaners, family cleaners, dust, synthetic fibers, wool fibers, medicated skin stuff, and ink.

If your cat has any allergies, do not treat it with an over-the-counter anti-allergy medication without your vet’s suggestions. In addition, some cats need veterinary care for anal gland issues.

Veterinarians say that a lot of cat irregularity is brought on by a hairball plugging up the feline’s system. If the hairball is vast, your vet may have to perform the instant surgical treatment to remove it. Like their human owners, some cats suffer from liver and kidney disease. Liver and kidney illness is most frequently seen in older cats. However, some younger cats will suffer liver illnesses that can be triggered by parasites, medications, infections, cancers, and toxic substances. Blood tests are typically required to precisely medical diagnose kidney or liver disease.

Cats with pancreatitis generally have abdominal pain, fever, and elevated heart rate. If you presume your feline is suffering from pancreatitis, you can attempt to withhold food and press water increased with electrolytes.

Pancreatitis is often related to diabetes.

Migraine Medications

Medical professionals prescribe two types of migraine medications to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.

There are two standard classes of migraine prescriptions, ergots, and triptans.

Common triptan adverse effects are facial flushing, tightness in the chest and throat, and skin tingling. Though still not considered severe, lightheadedness, tiredness, and sleepiness are less typical. What You Ought to Know Before Taking Adderall

Adderall is a pharmaceutical stimulant amphetamine used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy.

The exact mechanism of Adderall is unidentified; it is believed that Adderall works by blocking the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine into the presynaptic nerve cell and reverses the reuptake mechanism, turning it into a pump instead of a vacuum.

The increased flow of dopamine and norepinephrine into the extraneuronal space causes the brain, as one psychiatrist describes, to experience a more intense level of concentration, triggering an increased capability to focus for prolonged periods and a heightened interest in performing psychological jobs.

Though unusual, Adderall can cause psychotic episodes at recommended doses in patients with a history of psychosis.

Some individuals feel that they are less innovative while taking Adderall, while others report that the focusing effect can assist in creative work.

Typical adverse effects of Adderall consist of:

* Increased heart rate

* Insomnia

* Loss of Appetite

* Vertigo

* Headache

* Diarrhea

* Sweating

* Sexual dysfunction

* Dry Mouth

* Irritability

* Tremor

Because Adderall uses amphetamine stimulants to assist the user in concentrating for a prolonged number of times, many students today demand Adderall from physicians to utilize it as a research study help. Therefore, it is increasingly popular in college schools. The most significant advantage to students, however, is Adderall’s capability to give students the power to focus on and learn what would typically be a dull product.

It is likewise sought after by those wanting to lose weight since the appetite-suppressing residential or commercial properties of amphetamines. Another less typical usage for students is to take Adderall before or during a night of heavy drinking to remain alert and active despite being intoxicated.

On the street, Adderall is offered unlawfully for 2 to 8 a tablet (pills varying from 5 to 35 mg) (Purdie) or about 4- 10 for 20 mg (Peter). Slang terms for Adderall are: “study pals”, “clever pills”, “beenies”, “amps”, “a-bombs”, “addies”, “blue buddies”, “Blue Betties”, “jollies”, “smurfs”, “diet plan coke”, “Davies”, “team blue”, “the A train”, “A+” in reference to its stimulant result (Ambien or Zolpidem is typically referred to as “A-“, the reverse effect of Adderall), and in some regions of the U.S., “railguns” and “that’ da young boy( s).” On some college campuses taking Adderall is referred to as “taking the A train” or “getting some vitamin A.

Because Adderall utilizes amphetamine stimulants to help the user concentrate for extended durations of time, numerous students today demand Adderall from medical professionals to use as a research study help; therefore, it is increasingly popular on college campuses. However, the most significant benefit to trainees is Adderall’s ability to offer students the power to focus on and learn what would typically be an uninteresting product.

Intestinal Tract Weight Loss Surgery Today

In the past, weight reduction surgical treatment was constantly considered an extreme course of action for the morbidly overweight. Weight-loss surgery was primarily a dangerous proposal, often including slicing into the intestines and re-routing or stapling. Even nowadays, it holds that several types of weight reduction surgery are invasive, hard to reverse, and can cause serious problems. But, as more technology appears to surgeons, weight-loss surgery is now more straightforward and less dangerous than ever and hence, more typical.

Attempting to slim down for many individuals can be highly aggravating. No matter just how much dieting or exercise they do, nothing appears to help. Whether it is because of a hereditary component, a malfunction of the metabolism, or some subtle imbalance in the dedication, self-discipline, and body are not enough.

Weight loss surgery has become a more mainstream option as brand-new treatments and innovations make it less intrusive and safer. As a result, several types of weight loss surgery are frequently performed on obese patients.

Malabsorptive weight-loss surgical treatment is more invasive; in other words, it requires more internal surgical work than different types. Malabsorptive surgical treatment shortens the digestive tract and restricts the number of calories you can take. Amalgamations of malabsorptive and restrictive weight-loss surgical treatment procedures are also usually utilized. These surgical treatments limit the quantity of food in the stomach.

Bringing around too much weight can cause myriad health and emotional troubles. For example, the obese are more responsible for experiencing heart issues, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health issue. In addition, individuals who are morbidly obese have a much shorter life expectancy.

If standard weight reduction approaches have stopped working, you may want to consider weight reduction surgery. However, every one of the three above types of weight-loss surgical treatment has its benefits and drawbacks, so it’s essential to speak to a weight-loss surgery specialist to learn if these surgical treatments are an excellent solution for you.

Even nowadays, it is accurate that several types of weight-loss surgical treatments are invasive, hard to reverse, and can trigger severe issues. Weight loss surgery has become a more traditional option as brand-new treatments and innovations make it less intrusive and safer. Several types of weight-loss surgical treatments are typically carried out on overweight clients. Malabsorptive weight-loss surgical treatment is more invasive; in other words, it requires more internal surgical work than different types.

Healthy Solutions for Stress and Obesity

Advances in science and technology have reinvented how people live and work. The developments in 21st Century medical science have extended life span rates and eliminated a few of the illnesses that were as soon believed to be incurable.

Still, these modern miracles have disappointed in getting rid of two of the most problematic conditions that have afflicted humanity: tension and anxiety. No matter how many vitamins we take, or how many physical fitness programs we try … absolutely nobody can get resistance from life’s issues.

Another health problem that postures a challenge to medical science is the silent afflict of obesity. According to the U.S. Obesity Society, a minimum of 64% of Americans are overweight or now obese. The dramatic modifications in food intake or diet plan, the ease of transportation, and the modification of work into a more inactive activity have all added to the increase of weight problems.

Another significant aspect that has been left behind in the news is the truth that stress is a contributing cause of obesity. Food! You start to develop food yearnings as a way to relax your nerves and keep your mind off your issues for a while.

No surprise there is such as term as “home cooking.” Depressed people are more prone to give in to food yearnings. Studies reveal that a typical healthy person carries around about seven to ten pounds of hazardous waste. So, it is not tough to envision just how much waste obese people need to move around with. Other research studies expose that 10 percent of individuals who are overweight began overindulging as a method to get away from their stress and anxieties. The satisfaction of consuming had ended up being a method to block off all unfavorable thoughts and feelings.

Having a healthy mind and a healthy body is something that we cannot attain separately. Our ideas have a very huge influence on how our bodies feel. In some way, our bodies reveal our psychological and mental condition. Obesity, for that reason, could most likely be a sign of a more severe emotional and psychological issue.

Tension and anxiety, as indirect causes of overindulging and weight problems, must be addressed to avoid more severe health problems. To figure out whether you or an individual you know is being gradually drawn into a stress spiral, see if you have any of these stress symptoms:

Fatigue
High Blood Pressure
Insomnia
Irritability
Memory loss
Low self-esteem
Nervous twitches
Changes in sleep patterns
Withdrawal
Teeth-grinding
If you find yourself in the above categories, please talk to a health care professional. There are solutions available and Advanced Sleep Therapy can help you get on the right path to a better you!

What is Meditation?

What is Meditation?

Most techniques called meditation include these components:
1. You sit or lie in a relaxed position.
2. You breathe regularly. You breathe in deep enough to get enough oxygen. When you breathe out, you relax your muscles so that your lungs are well emptied, but without straining.
3. You stop thinking about everyday problems and matters.
4. You concentrate your thoughts upon some sound, some word you repeat, some image, some abstract concept or some feeling. Your whole attention should be pointed at the object you have chosen to concentrate upon.
5. If some foreign thoughts creep in, you just stop this foreign thought, and go back to the object of meditation.
The different meditation techniques differ according to the degree of concentration, and how foreign thoughts are handled. By some techniques, the objective is to concentrate so intensely that no foreign thoughts occur at all.
In other techniques, the concentration is more relaxed so that foreign thoughts easily pop up. When these foreign thoughts are discovered, one stops these and goes back to the pure meditation in a relaxed manner. Thoughts coming up, will often be about things you have forgotten or suppressed, and allow you to rediscover hidden memory material. This rediscovery will have a psychotherapeutic effect.
As any kind of training, meditation may be exaggerated so that you get tired and worn out. Therefore, you should not meditate so long or so concentrated that you feel tired or mentally emptied.

Meditation may sometimes give problems for people suffering from mental diseases, epilepsy, serious heart problems or neurological diseases. On the other hand, meditation may be of help in the treatment of these and other conditions.
People suffering from such conditions should check out what effects the different kinds of meditation have on their own kind of health problems, before beginning to practice meditation, and be cautious if they choose to begin to meditate. It may be wise to learn meditation from an experienced teacher, psychologist or health worker that use meditation as a treatment module for the actual disease.

Living Wills and Healthcare Power of Attorneys Help to Make Sure Your Wishes are Met

Living Wills and Healthcare Power of Attorneys Help to Make Sure Your Wishes are Met

No one can foresee problems that may arise should he become incapacitated. Yet, you can avoid negative consequences of unforeseen problems by creating Living Wills and Healthcare Power of Attorneys (HCPOA).

Setting up a Living Will or HCPOA is a relatively simple task. The first step it to consult with an attorney that specializes in estate planning to ensure that your documents are clear. Here’s an overview of what you can expect from your Living Will and HCPOA.

Healthcare Power of Attorney
The HCPOA, otherwise known as a “healthcare proxy” is a legal document that enables an individual that you appoint (your “agent”) to act as your healthcare representative if you become incapacitated. The agent becomes your acting representative at the moment you become incapacitated, thus eliminating the need for your loved ones to argue over your rights and wishes in court.

Your agent has the authority to request or deny any medical treatment that he determines to be appropriate. Therefore, it is a good idea to choose someone that you trust as your agent. Please note: In most states, your spouse will be your default agent. If you are not married but are in a lifelong relationship your partner, he does not automatically become your agent. Make sure that you appoint your partner as your agent to ensure that he or she has control over your medical decisions if you are unable to make them.

Because your agent has whatever powers you give him or her, make sure that he or she understands your desires. Some of the decisions he or she may need to make include but are not limited to:
Deciding whether or not you will receive medical treatment
Withdrawing life-support

Living Will
A Living Will and HCPOA should be used in tandem, since one document complements the other. Your Living Will is a document that clearly expresses your desires. In short, your Living Will provides your medical team with instructions for how to carry out your wishes should you become incapacitated. For example, if you become brain dead, you can state in your Living Will that you wish to receive or not to receive life support.

By creating a Living Will, you ensure that your desires will be carried out without court involvement that can be costly and stressful for your family. Criteria for enacting a Living Will vary by state; so, make sure that you consult with an attorney to ensure that your Living Will complies with the rules in your state.

Lessen the rate at which you snore!

Lessen the rate at which you snore!

When you are trying to lessen or stop the rate at which you snore, you need to limit the vibration of surrounding tissues in your throat and breathing passages

The vibration in your throat of your throat and other breathing muscles and organs is what causes your snoring sounds. If you are looking to stop, just stop the vibrations, or limit them. A throat spray often works well, so you should try that one out. It will tighten your throat so that you don’t get as much vibrations as you might have otherwise. There are lots of specially made dental appliances you can use when you are trying to stop snoring. Referred to as mandibular advancement splints, they cause your lower jaw to protrude slightly and pull your tongue forward in this way. Without the tongue to block you air passage, there should be no reason for you to snore.

There are lots of pharmacies in the areas all around you in which you can pick up medications that can help with your snoring. You don’t have to take everything they say in the commercials at face value; read the labels yourself and decide if it is the type that will work for you before using it.

CPAP machines, are actually useful in stopping snoring in your sleep. They have air pumps in their bases, as well as a device to absorb sounds. The pumps give you the air you need in regulated amounts and you get to sleep without snoring.
If your doctor prescribes a CPAP machine you might want to check out the popular ResMed AirSense

How To Overcome Anger And Road Rage

How To Overcome Anger And Road Rage

Recently it was reported that a 41-year-old driver was shot because he pulled into the exact change lane and a driver was angry with him for his slowness? Yikes it is terrible to read about this and so sad the desperation and daily blow ups that occur. This can happen a lot when someone drives slowly in left lane, sees a tailgater or watches someone else steal a parking space.

Why else do we have road rage reactions? Seeing someone ignore a traffic sign, excessive honking, watching someone on their cell phone who is oblivious to traffic patterns and excessive speeding are other reasons. We even feel anger growing inside of us as we see others being aggressive on the highway. What does that tell us?

The truth is that when people are doing these activities, they are already themselves in need of an anger management strategy, but it’s a chain reaction then where observers around them get enraged as well by having to be subject to these behaviors. Is there a way to gain more control over our reactions that are the common cause of road rage? Can we stay calm if someone is making an obscene gesture on the highway? Why do we take things so personally when they are from a stranger?

As a therapist, I find that seeing the highway as a time to view one’s mind with humor and to practice compassion and patience is a very good habit to get into. I’ll try to think about the fact that people are struggling with fears of being late, family tensions or job issues and this contributes to poor and inattentive driving. I try to give someone a break. Don’t take it personally or think someone is out to get you.

Gaining perspective is very important and I also remember that I won’t be thinking about this situation an hour from now and it is going to pass. It is not permanent; you won’t see these people again and it is temporary. You may ride this road daily to work but you don’t even see the same people.

I’ll breathe in slowly and exhale twice as slowly. This helps to calm the mind and is a good tool for stress control and staying centered. Relaxing music is calming and also using audio tapes on books or self-help lessons are great ways to use the driving time for self-growth.

There is no point in getting into a state while driving where you are sweating, have stomach cramps, look glaringly at others or have your heart racing. Just bring yourself back to your own breathing and how this situation isn’t worth stressing over.

Road rage can be helped with anger management skills, techniques and tips so that your day is not carrying these dark feelings but you instead learn skills that keep you balanced and can make you a more harmonious person in all situations.

It is so worthwhile to cultivate because if you master this, you also master other situations such as a friend being late, a child picking on his younger brother or a significant other raising his or her voice. This is a true skill you can carry with you everywhere.

How to Fight the Effects of Aging

How to Fight the Effects of Aging

Like any battle, the fight against aging is best fought on several fronts
simultaneously.

Get Up and Get Moving
Exercise is the key to a healthy life if you’re eight or 80. A brisk 30 minute
walk every day can do wonders. Take friends along or get a dog for company. It helps with motivation too. Even those unable to walk can still get some exercise while stationary through repetitive movement exercises. It’s important to do what you can.

Eat Smart
The right kind of foods in the right quantities can do wonders to stave off the
aging process. Plenty of fruits and vegetables, particularly the most colorful ones, which tend to be rich in nutrients, are important. So is keeping your total fat intake down, saturated fats in particular. Read food labels and substitute saturated fat in the diet for complex carbohydrates like starch and fiber.

Busy Body, Busy Mind
Exercise keeps the body working, but a flexible mind is just as important. The more occupied the mind stays, the more its cells are stretched, the better shape it stays in. Start tackling the daily crossword and read the rest of the newspaper while you’re at it. Take up a hobby, keep busy and give yourself things to look forward to.

Products
It never hurts to have a little help and there are a wide variety of anti-aging products on the market to help beat the aging process. Aging most obviously
manifests itself in outward appearance and there’s no shortage of products that tackle that problem. Anti-wrinkle creams that hydrate and tighten skin can take years off a face and are a more cost effective and safer alternative to expensive plastic surgery procedures or injections of substances like Botox.

As well as creams and lotions, there are numerous hormone supplements and pharmaceuticals available that make varying claims of slowing or even reversing the aging process. The production of the hormone Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA for short, decline sharply in the elderly and has been popular in the marketplace for almost 10 years thanks to its reported life-extending qualities.

Other natural supplements that have been lauded include fish oil, which helps combat heart disease, and green tea, which is said to inhibit the growth of
undesirable cells in the body.

Laugh Loud, Live Long
It’s the best medicine, it keeps you young, it’s birthed a thousand clichés, but there’s no getting around it – laughter feels good and that can’t be bad. Rent
a comedy, read a book of humorous fiction, share some jokes, get together with friends and reminisce about the good old days. Whatever gets you
laughing keeps you young at heart, which is a good thing physically and emotionally. Smiling makes you look younger, too.

Find Peace and Happiness Through Gardening

Find Peace and Happiness Through Gardening

Gardening is a wonderful and relaxing hobby enjoyed by many all over the world. People who enjoy gardening often feel a deep-rooted sense of calm and tranquility, and they also forge a stronger connection with nature.

There are many types and forms of gardening. Organic gardening is a unique method of gardening and allows the gardener to really bond with Mother Nature. Organic gardening really gets down to the basics of growing fruits and vegetables, using only what Mother Nature provides. Container gardening is another way of gardening and allows many people who do not have their own garden to still enjoy gardening using pots and containers.

Container gardening is a great way to decorate and accentuate your house and your outdoor area. Plant containers such as clay urns, metal pans, terra cotta pots, wine tubs, wood boxes, bath tubs, glass bowls, wire baskets, sisal rope planters, cement hollows etc. all work well. You want to be sure to have an assortment of beautiful flowers and plants of varying heights as well as shapes and textures when planning your garden.

Organic gardening requires much more attention and involvement in the whole process. When you grow the plants organically, you do not add any artificial or chemical substances to the soil to avoid their negative health consequences. In organic gardening natural compost is needed to fertilize the soil. Natural compost is derived from plant, fruit or kitchen waste and contains no harmful chemical pesticides in it.

Whether you go for container gardening or organic gardening, the preparation and gardening methods are pretty similar. After you decide on what type of gardening you want to do, prepare your spot and soil for planting. You must remove all weeds, grass, stones, etc using various gardening supplies or herbicides. When this is completed, you can plow the planting area and add nutrients such as manure, compost, peat or sand to the soil. If your soil is too sandy, you will need to add compost to give it the necessary nutrients it needs.

Gardening supplies are essential for good gardening. They make gardening easy, and there are certain gardening supplies that gardeners find indispensable, including gloves, spade, scissors, pruners, levelers etc. Make sure to buy good quality gardening supplies for ease of use, such as gardening gloves made of high-quality leather, and gardening spades or pruners made of stainless steel.

Allergies to Pets

Allergies to Pets

In this article we’re going to discuss one of the most annoying kinds of allergies that there is, especially for us animal lovers – allergies to pets and what can be done to reduce the allergens produced by pets.

The sad fact is that 10 to 15% of all the people in the world suffer from some kind of allergy to animals, which can make owning a pet not only annoying but potentially dangerous if the allergy is severe enough. Cat allergies are actually twice as common as dog allergies. The body’s reaction to the animals is caused by a certain protein found in the animal’s saliva, urine or dander. People aren’t really allergic to the pet’s fur but to the allergen that sticks to the fur, the carpeting or the furniture; basically, anywhere your pet has been. Also, these microscopic flakes of dander travel through the air. As a matter of fact, studies show that these allergens can stay in the air even 3 years after an animal has actually been in the home.

Many people ask if there are any breeds of animals that people are not allergic to. The answer is, since all animals have dead skin there are no non allergic breeds. People may be more tolerant of certain breeds of dogs than others but there is no such thing as 100% non-allergic. All animals produce some amount of allergen, even if it is a small amount. The allergic symptoms themselves build over time after handling or being near an animal, with the peak time being around 12 hours after. Also, as the pet spends more time living in the person’s home the allergens begin to accumulate and a person who showed no symptoms when handling the pet at the store when buying it will start to show symptoms after it has been home for a while, usually within a day.

So, what’s the answer for people who want to have a pet but are allergic? What can they do in order to have a pet? Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is try to reduce your exposure to the allergens. You’re not going to be able to get rid of them completely. One thing you can do to try to prevent the accumulation of allergens is to cover your furniture with plastic mattresses and pillow covers. Replace your carpeting with hard wooden floors and washable throw rugs. Clean the house as often as you can. Make sure you vacuum with a cleaner that has a HEPA filter otherwise allergens are just going to end up getting spread into the air. Your pet should be kept out of your bedroom completely. This may be hard for a real pet lover but it is essential. When you brush your pet, wear a face mask.

Then change your clothes immediately afterward. Unfortunately, the success rate of allergy shots and other treatments for pet allergies is only about 50%. Currently however, a vaccine for people allergic to cats is being tested. This may be a major breakthrough in the future.

Until then, there really isn’t much more you can do. If your allergies are severe it is probably best to stick with a fish for a pet.

Bigger than a Snore: snoring treatment

Bigger than a Snore: snoring treatment

Snoring treatment is more than just nudging your partner to make him stop snoring for a few minutes. But then the loud vibratory sound comes back again disrupting your sleep or makes you head to the other room or couch to get some decent sleep.

Although snoring is common, this condition can strain relationships and complicate to sleep apnea, a sleeping disorder characterized by a pause in breathing for a minimum of 10 seconds several times in one night, and in turn can lead to other serious health problems like hypertension, high blood pressure, heart ailments, and stroke according to recent studies.

Various factors contribute to snoring

The following factors can trigger snoring. These include irregularities in the anatomy of the air passages and the throat. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids can create a blockage in the throat. Likewise, an elongated uvula (the soft tissue hanging from the soft palate) is also a factor in blocking the airflow leading to increased vibration. Surgery might be a snoring treatment for these. An obese person has the tendency to snore because the fats around the neck narrow the air passage obstructing the free flow of air.

A full meal, alcohol and sedatives initiate snoring because they relax the muscles around the throat, including the tongue those behind the soft palate, causing them to collapse and create a blockade. As a snoring treatment, doctors advise avoiding the consumption of these 3 hours before going to bed.

Irregularities in the nose’s cartilage, such as a deviated septum, also contributes in obstructing the airflow and lead to snoring. Snoring treatment may be surgery to correct this problem.

Snoring treatment

Before finding a snoring treatment, understanding the causes of snoring would be helpful in deciding what time of snoring treatment to use. Your doctor can examine you to evaluate at what part of your air passage needs treatment or refer you to an otolaryngologist. At this point, snoring treatment would range from oral appliances, traditional surgery, laser surgery, somnoplasty, to CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure.

CPAP is the most popular snoring treatment these days because it’s non-invasive and safe. Traditional or laser surgery is not recommended as a snoring treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as it could aggravate their conditions. Oral appliances work by gently advancing you lower jaw or tongue forward to create a wider opening in the air throat.

These home snoring treatments might also help in reducing the incidence of snoring. Lose weight, if you are overweight, because fats can add to bulk in the throat or thick soft palate. Sleeping at a certain position, like at your sides, prevents your tongue from falling backward and helps you breath better. Nasal Strips are adhesive strips placed on your nose to rid of obstructions and enhance breathing.

It has been proven time and time again that weight-loss attempts by following weight-loss diet plans may succeed for a short time but experts feel that dieter are setting themselves up for failure. In the end, experts believe that using common sense will result in a healthier dieting experience.

Weight loss experts all agree that it is impossible to sustain weight loss, a well-balanced diet and exercise is essential.

The medical community, food industry, dietitian’s government health and diet businesses are all watching helplessly as Americans continue to consume excessive amounts of food and become increasingly obese. Because this epidemic of obesity there has been an increase in heart disease, diabetes, and several other weight related health issues.

It is widely felt through all communities that there are weight loss plans and programs that will prey on the overweight and obese. Knowing what their insecurities are and taking advantage of them.

How Your Allergies Can Benefit from Hepa Filters

How Your Allergies Can Benefit from Hepa Filters

Hepa filters are the most effective air cleaning systems sold for home use. They are used in hospitals and doctors recommend them above other air filtration systems for patients with asthma or severe allergies. They aren’t energy efficient for whole house filtration systems due to the amount of energy needed to run them. For this reason, most are intended to treat one space. You may need to purchase one for the bedroom and another for the living area.

Hepa is an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter. This method is more effective at removing small particles from the air than any other filtration media. They can be used alone in an air cleaner or combined with another method, such as an electrostatic air purifier. These filters are sometimes used on another appliance, such as a vacuum cleaner or humidifiers in cold weather or a dry climate.

Effectiveness of Hepa Filters

The effectiveness of a filter is measured by the size of the particles it can remove from the air. This is stated in microns. The smaller the number, the more particles will be removed from your air. In general, you should look for a filter that will remove 99.97% of all particles 0.1 microns or larger.

These filters remove a wide variety of contaminants from the air. They are very effective at removing dust mites and pet dander, which are two very common allergens in homes. They also reduce smoke, pollen and mold spores from the air.

For the air cleaning system to be effective, it needs to fit the room. Most air purifier models are marked for the number of square feet they cover. Find out the square footage of the space where you intend to use the purifier before you go shopping. Choose one that works for a slightly larger area for best results. For example, if the room is 300 square feet, look for a system that will treat 400 square feet. A purifier that works for only 300 square feet will be less effective at removing all the particles in your air.

In most cases, these filters are disposable. For the system to be effective, the filter must be changed as needed. Follow the directions from the manufacturer for how often it needs to be changed. The more the air cleaner is used, the more the filters will need to be changed. In general, you will need to change it every three to six months.

Hepa Vacuum Cleaners

If you have an air cleaner, but you use a traditional vacuum cleaner, the air won’t be as clean as you would like. Dust and other particles in the carpet is kicked up into the air by vacuuming. This causes more irritants in the air for you to breathe. Hepa filters are being used in vacuum cleaners. The filter traps particles inside, leaving fewer irritants in the air.

Some vacuum cleaners use a single filter, while others use multi stage or multiple filters. These filters are cleanable and need to be replaced yearly. For the system to be effective, you should look for a filter that is capable of catching small particles. When replacing filters, be sure to buy the right size for your vacuum.

Are You Having A Heart Attack?

Are You Having A Heart Attack?

Heart attacks come in all sizes, from minor to major, and the symptoms of a pending heart attack can be deceiving in many cases. Some symptoms of a pending heart attack may have been showing up for quite a while and were ignored as something else.

Pending heart attack symptoms mask themselves as indigestion, being overworked and tired all the time, and taking naps several times a day.

During a real heart attack, you may feel feverish, have a nauseous sick feeling, shortness of breath, labored breathing, sweating, tingling in arms, chest pain, heaviness in the chest area like someone is pushing on your chest and various other indications.

Your life may depend on you making the right decision within minutes, is what you are feeling a heart attack… as a quick response time in calling for help… 911… could be the determining factor that saves your life. It’s better to be wrong, than to be right and not get help on the way ASAP!

One of the major causes of a heart attack is the restriction of blood flow to the heart muscle, which causes any number of symptoms. But the bottom line is, how severe is your heart attack. That will in many ways determine what symptoms you experience. The more severe the blockage, the more severe the heart attack symptoms in most cases. The blockage may occur due to a blood clot, or material buildup inside the artery walls that breaks loose.

Many hospitals are not fully equipped to deal with heart attack victims, and will transfer the patient by air to a hospital or medical center with a heart attack specialist who can determine how bad it was, and one who has the skill to repair the damage caused by the heart attack.

The quicker the blood flow to the heart muscle is restored, the better your chance for a complete recovery from your heart attack. Don’t delay, if you have experienced any symptoms seek medical assistance.

Does Your Weight Loss Plan Cause Food Cravings?

Does Your Weight Loss Plan Cause Food Cravings?

For your weight loss plan to be a weight loss success, it’s absolutely critical that you understand the difference between weight loss fad diets and safe, effective weight loss routines that produce long-lasting weight loss results.

There are all sorts of weight loss programs out there that can help you lose weight (not necessarily fat), but they are so miserable that it’s impossible to stay on them very long – even more difficult is keeping the weight loss results you achieved.

The four characteristics for successful weight loss are:

1. The weight loss plan must avoid cravings
2. The weight loss plan must avoid hunger
3. The weight loss plan must include increasing your activity level
4. It must be a weight loss plan you can live with for a lifetime

What are cravings? A craving is when your body pushes you to want a particular food ingredient. This can occur even when you are not hungry. When you finally give in and get the food, you almost always binge, that is, eat more than you would have if you did not have the cravings in the first place. For the most part, your body is probably asking for water, but out of bad habit you might turn to fatty fast foods to fill the gap.

What causes cravings? Your body needs 6 essential food ingredients to function properly. They are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, vitamins and water. If you deprive your body of any of these, it will create the sensation that will drive you to get it. The most easily identified example is when you deprive your body of water. You develop thirst. Thirst is the body’s craving for water. Don’t turn to fast food, when all your body is asking for is a big glass or two of fresh cool water. Better still, don’t turn to a fad diet that restricts you to eating one or two items only. This will only heighten your body’s need for other foods.

Weight loss plans that tell you to cut out particular foods will always lead to cravings. It is this battle in your body to give it what it needs that creates conditions of discomfort and lead to most individuals ending the weight loss programs. There is an area of the brain that controls what and how much you eat. It is also responsible for creating cravings as a way for you to provide the body what it needs.

So, what is the best way to avoid cravings? First and foremost, the best way to avoid cravings is by eating all the required food ingredients. The key is that in all of the food groups, there are “good” types and “not so good” types of foods. You need to know the good types and eat only those. For example, with carbohydrates, good types (in general) are the ones with a low glycemic index (GI). GI is a measure of how fast a food increases the production of insulin. Insulin causes fat buildup. Whole grains and vegetables have low GIs and therefore are good for weight loss.

By understanding the weight loss concept of eating all of the essential foods and dividing them into “good” and “not so good” foods, you will avoid cravings and overeating.

Cooking for Two

Cooking for Two

Whether you are cooking for two out of a sense of romance or necessity you will find that there are many resources online and off when it comes to finding the perfect combinations for those terrific twosomes. One thing to keep in mind however is that when cooking for two, it is sometimes best if two are doing the cooking. This gives cooking an opportunity to become a communication event rather than a chore.

Despite the fact that there are many resources and recipes available to those that are cooking for two there are also equal occasions to take traditional recipes that are designed to feed four and make them an opportunity to stretch your food dollars even further. By cooking traditional meals for four and feeding a portion you have managed to cook two meals for the time investment of one. It’s a good deal for many, particularly those that do not relish the idea of cooking at all, much less of cooking for two.

Young couples and older couples alike often find that it is easier and almost as inexpensive to hit the fast food or other casual dining establishments than it is to prepare a nice healthy meal for two at home. The one thing they often forget is that cooking for two can be an interesting way to bring a little romance into the evening when done right of course.

Cooking is an art that most people have forgotten as it is also a necessary act unless you wish to live on sushi and raw vegetables. Even in these situations however there is typically some degree of preparation that is involved in the process. Food is beautiful and can be beautifully arranged if you are of the mind to do so. This means that you can spend a great deal of time not only creating new and delicious foods, but also visually appealing food combinations as well.

When cooking for two you will have the most opportunity for experimentation when it comes to food as any other time in your life. You have the option of trying great new cuisines and the knowledge that if you do not like the food, you are not wasting multiple servings. You can try to mix and match flavors and textures. You can make works of art on your plate or go for the guts, gore, and eyeballs galore. Cooking for two opens doors that aren’t necessarily available when cooking for larger crowds with more limiting tastes.

Cooking for two is a great way to get your partner involved in the cooking process as well. When cooking for two you can discover the many great things that you both enjoy and those that aren’t so appealing to one or the other of you. Make sure that when you are cooking for two that you invite an open and honest dialog about the things that you like and dislike about the meals being prepared. This will help you discover things to add to your regular menu as well as things to avoid making a part of your dinner rotation.

Perhaps the greatest thing about cooking for two is the fact that you can afford to enjoy special occasion cuisine more often when you are only feeding two than when you are feeding larger crowds. Bring on the steaks and lobster tail. Learn how to make shrimp scampi and filet mignon. Take the time, when cooking for two, to prepare those dishes that you love most. After all, it is really living when you live to dine rather than when you dine to live.

Cooking for two is so much more than a cliché. It is a great way to explore the culinary universe while exposing your palates to some wonderful surprises along the way. The Internet, bookstores, and libraries are filled with books about cooking for two. Take advantage of the opportunity to do just that and you’ll be amazed at the world of flavors you’ve invited into your kitchen.

Skin Care Tips to Keep Your Skin Beautiful

Skin Care Tips to Keep Your Skin Beautiful

Skin care is not all about applying anti-aging creams and keeping your skin cleansed regularly. Skin care is also preventing your skin from unnecessary sun damage. Sun damage can rear its ugly head when you are not looking and sometimes even when you are. This article provides you with valuable information on how sun damage can occur and what you can do to prevent it and keep your skin healthy.

Proper skin care should start at a young age. Be sure to give your baby a bath with the gentle products designed specifically for them. The harsh chemicals in adult cleansers can irritate a baby’s skin or cause an allergic reaction that may require a trip to your pediatrician’s office.

Cleanse your skin 1-2 times every day with lukewarm water for healthy skin. Regular cleansing removes dirt and other damaging residues from your skin. If you are outside during the day, this is especially important as you are exposed to more pollutants and dust. It is always best to make sure to cleanse with lukewarm water because both hot and cold water damage your skin.

Exposure to sunlight breaks down the collagen in the skin of your hands, so make sure that you take special care to use sun block on your hands to prevent this damage. You can help to repair this damage by using creams with alphahydroxy acids and peptides to rebuild collagen and thicken skin over time.

For optimal skin health, make sure you eat foods containing vitamins A, C, and E. Skin care isn’t just about what you put on your face. The foods that you eat play an important role in the quality of your skin, as well. These same vitamins can be found in skin creams, but are much more effective in protecting your skin when consumed in foods.

The different brands of soap you choose can actually make a big difference in the condition and health of your skin. For instance, if you have naturally oily skin you should avoid soaps that are high in oils and stick with dryer bars. The reverse should be taken if you have naturally dry skin, etc.

If you want to massage your baby’s skin, don’t choose a mineral based oil to do it with. Instead try something natural, like olive oil or almond oil. Mineral oil contains ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin. A natural choice will often have minimal ingredients that could pose as irritants.

Give yourself an at-home spa treatment to supplement the care of your skin. Once a week, simmer 2 to 4 tablespoons of chamomile tea in about 2 quarts of water. Place the steaming mixture on a potholder at your kitchen or dining room table and sit with your face tilted towards the mixture making sure you are sitting at a comfortable distance from the steam. Enjoy the steam for about 15 minutes.

All in all, skin care is not all about beauty products and special cleansers. Skin care is about preventing sun damage. Sun damage is a very serious problem for most people, and they need to do everything they can to prevent it. This article has provided you with extremely valuable information about sun damage and how to prevent it. If you follow the advice given in this article, you should remain to have healthy, sun-damage free skin.

Oxygen for Optimum Health

The Vital Importance of Oxygen for Optimum Health

The renowned biochemist scientist Dr. Otto Warburg may have discovered an underlying cause of all cancers over 50 years ago. He actually won two Nobel Prizes for discovering the clues as to why cancer develops. In 1931 Dr. Warburg won his first Nobel Prize for his work in proving cancer is caused by a lack of oxygen respiration in cells. He has shown that cancer cells cannot grow in a highly oxygenated environment. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation. He revealed that when oxygen fails and fermentation is substituted for a cell’s energy, the pathway to cancer is opened. He stated that the main cause of cancer is the replacement of this normal oxygen respiration of body cells by an anaerobic (without oxygen) cell respiration.

Some causes of poor oxygenation include a buildup of carcinogens and other toxins within and around cells, which blocks and then damages the cellular oxygen respiration mechanism. The majority of the foods and drinks we consume are acidic, with colas and other soft drinks being highly acidic. Sang Whang, in his book Reverse Aging, points out that toxins are acidic. If blood starts to become acidic, then the body must take the toxins out of the blood and deposit them in cells so that the blood will be able to maintain a slightly alkaline condition. This causes those cells to become more acidic, and also causes a decrease in their oxygen levels. Alkaline water (including the water in cells) can hold a lot of oxygen. Acidic water (or cells) can hold very little oxygen. So, the more acidic your cells are, the less oxygenated they will be.

It is not so easy to get oxygen into cells. Breathing oxygen is still limited by the amount of hemoglobin and acidity for getting oxygen into the cells. A delivery mechanism is needed to get the oxygen into the cells,

A lack of oxygen results in sickness, poor vitality, poor stamina, fatigue and a general weak disposition. Authorities stress that most diseases especially yeast or fungal infections like Candida albians occur most frequently in any oxygen poor environment in the body. Dr. Stephen Levine, a molecular biologist and respected nutrition researcher has also stated, “We can look at oxygen deficiency as the single greatest cause of disease.” Thus, the development of a shortage of oxygen in the blood could very well be the starting point for the loss of the immune system and the beginning of feared health problems such as cancer, leukemia, aids, seizures, nerve deterioration and Candida.

Though oxygen is one of the important keys to good health, not everyone is aware of this. Scientists are only now looking at the important role that oxygen plays in the prevention of disease. The four modern day stressors, toxic stress, emotional stress, physical trauma and infections, all draw upon and excessively deplete the body’s oxygen supply.
The result? Anaerobic diseases (virus, bacteria, fungus – which like low Oxygen) find it hard to thrive in such an Oxygen-rich environment.
Oxygen provides life and energy to every living cell. If poor eating habits, drinking, pollution, toxins, drugs or lack of exercise abuse the body, the cells are deprived of vital oxygen and the immune system may be weakened. Low oxygen levels are undesirable because they affect the body’s metabolism and may even cause it to manufacture improper chemicals and/or give rise to various health problems.

Oxygen is a powerful detoxifier and when it is deficient, then toxins begin to devastate the body functions and deplete the body of life-giving energy. Initial symptoms of oxygen deficiency may include overall weakness, fatigue, circulations problems, poor digestion, muscle aches and pains, dizziness, depression, memory loss, irrational behavior, irritability, acid stomach and bronchial complications. One of oxygen’s main functions in the body is disintegration; rubble, garbage, toxins, refuse, debris, and any useless substance is destroyed by oxygen and carried out of the system. One can therefore realize the vital importance of oxygen to optimum health.

Managing Your Personal Finances Could Help You Live Better

Managing Your Personal Finances Could Help You Live Better

You owe it to yourself to become knowledgeable about your personal finances. You work hard for your money and spend a lot of time doing so. You can use the knowledge you have about your finances to help you reach whatever financial goal you have set out to achieve for yourself.

Use your calendar as a tool that helps you manage your finances. Every upcoming bill should appear on your calendar, so that it’s harder for you to miss them. In order to ensure that you pay on time, the date you mark should be the date you intend to pay, rather than the due date. This gives you a built-in safety net.

If you live near a group of employees that you work with, form a carpool. This will allow you to save money on gas, reducing one of your expenses dramatically over the year. Carpooling is not only fun, but a great way to implement as a money management tool for the year’s expenses.

Plan out a budget, and stick to it by using shopping lists that you write before going to the store. This helps avoid unnecessary purchases, as does keeping receipts and bank statements. Balancing your checkbook also helps you see where you are spending your money, so you can make the most of your income.

Get a copy of your credit report. You may not be in any real trouble, but keeping an eye on your credit report keeps you aware of your financial picture. You can also check the credit report for any mistakes so you can take care of them at your leisure instead of rushing to do so.

Take stock of your monthly bills and find areas for cuts. Evaluate whether all the features of your utilities are necessary. You may find options that go unused, yet are paid regularly. You may also find special offers that cut your costs for a period of time. Just pay attention to time frames and check overall costs first.

To keep your finances under control, you should stop worrying about fads and current styles. Keeping up on fashion is very expensive and really, only benefits manufacturers. Keep that hard earned money for yourself by only purchasing classic pieces from time to time, as your clothes wear out. This can leave you with thousands of dollars saved each year.

If you want to save money at the checkout line, don’t be afraid to use generic brands. Many people assume that brand names are best, but the truth is that generics are just as good as their expensive counterparts. You can go generic on almost everything, including food, laundry soap, prescription medication and soft drinks.

If you want to improve your personal finances, you should consider cutting off your unnecessary services. For example, cable is very expensive and not necessary at all. You could easily save 360 dollars each year by cutting out that one expense. Just think about what you pay for each month and how important it is to you. Finally, remove the things that you do not need.

Knowledge is power when it comes to personal finances. The more you know about money, the more likely you are to make good, sound financial decisions that will affect everything you do. Knowing about your money is a wise decision, it will help you now and in the future.

Cough Medicine

Cough Medicine

When we get sick with a nasty cold, one of the first things we want to do is take cough medicine I don’t often get colds, but when I do, that is indeed the first thing that I take out of the cupboard. When my little girl gets sick, I also give her cough medicine, but I make sure there is more time than recommended between doses. There are a few reasons I do this, and I may be out of my mind, but I think there is something to be said for allowing the body to fight off a cold on its own.

When you take cough medicine the urge to cough goes away. I’m not exactly sure how it works, but it does. I have had a few coughs there were resistant to cough medicine, but for the most part it does what it is supposed to do. We cough for a reason though, and that is to get rid of the stuff that is building up in our lungs. It’s good to cough, though there is no reason to do it constantly for a week when you have gotten a cold.

When it comes time to give my daughter cough medicine, I have a few rules that I follow. I always give it to her before bed so that she can sleep through the night. When you are sick, sleep is essential. I don’t want her coughing all night and staying awake. I know she will just feel worse in the morning. When she gets up in the morning though, I wait a few hours before I give her more cough medicine. This allows her a little time to cough so that she can get some of that stuff out of her lungs. I don’t let it go on too long, but I think it’s important that she allows her body to fight the cold a bit on its own.

I also don’t want her to think that cough medicine is something that you take when you get the smallest of sniffles. I don’t like to medicate myself all the time, and I don’t want her to do the same thing. It’s easy to allow yourself to use meds to get over things, but it might help your immune system if you let it work for you. Not only that, cough medicine can make you a little loopy. There are times when you need to be sharp, and coughing is a better alternative to being sloppy and dim minded.

Kidney Problems in Diabetics who are Obese

Kidney Problems in Diabetics who are Obese

Both diabetics and obesity are linked to kidney failure. There are many people who are both diabetic and obese and they have an increased risk of being diagnosed with serious kidney problems that lead to dialysis or the need for a transplant. Kidney failure and damage in a diabetic patient is known as diabetic nephropathy.

The kidneys’ job is to clean the blood but when the blood has excess sugar (glucose) present it causes damage to the kidneys. This damage can happen even before someone knows they are diabetic or if they are not diabetic bur are considered obese. High blood sugars that are present in the bodies of obese people and diabetics are a problem to these organs and other functions in body.

There really aren’t any symptoms for the early signs of kidney damage. You probably will not know that it is occurring unless your doctor performs a test to check for protein in your urine (done with a dip stick in the office). If the doctor finds the presence of protein it will be closely monitored depending on the amount of protein present. During the beginning stages of diabetic nephropathy the kidneys are still able to function and do their job of cleaning the blood. Action will need to be taken to get blood glucose levels under control to prevent further damage to the kidneys.

If your kidneys fail you are at risk for high blood pressure and the build-up of toxins in your blood because the kidneys are not able to filter them out. The two options available at this point are dialysis or a kidney transplant. Dialysis is a method to clean your blood using an external machine you are hooked up to that your blood is run through and then put back in your body.

Basic tips to prevent spinal cord injuries

Basic tips to prevent spinal cord injuries

Studies show that there are about 500,000 people in the United States, alone, are suffering from Spinal Cord Injuries or SCI. The people who are usually involved are those within the age bracket of 16 to 30 years old. Experts say that in this age bracket, there is 82 percent of males who are greatly affected and women take the rest.

In both genders, it is said that the most common causes include vehicular accidents, heavy falls, and wounds brought by gunshots. Among men, the leading causes of spinal cord injuries include driving and sports-related accidents while in women, the leading causes are in the form of heavy falls as well as medical or surgical complications.

If spinal cord injuries are not diagnosed and treated the earliest possible time, there’s a great chance for it to develop into “transverse myelitis”. This is among the rarest neurological disorders there are which is usually caused by an inflamed spinal cord. In the US alone, 400 to 1,500 people have affected annually. Experts say that this disorder should be carefully monitored and treated because if not, it can paralyze a person for life.

Prevention is the key

Experts say that in any condition or illness, prevention is the best and the cheapest key. To be able to avoid this, the first thing that one needs to know is the familiarizing him or herself about the leading causes of SCI and how to prevent these at all times. Studies show that the leading causes of spinal cord injuries are vehicular accidents, heavy falls, and sports-related activities. Here are some of the tips for each respective cause that can help you prevent acquiring the disorder:

1. Vehicular accidents. Studies show that auto or car accidents are the major cause of SCI and greatly affects people—especially male—below 65 years of age. To avoid car accidents, drivers should always:

– wear a safety belt as well as all the passengers inside to minimize the impact of pressure in case there’s an accident;

– adhere to child safety practices especially is there are infants or young children inside the car;

– ask children 12 and below to be in the back seat with their seatbelts fastened properly;

– follow road rule and obey the appropriate speed limits all the time;

– be clear-headed—without the influence of drugs or alcohol—when driving so as not to cause accidents to his or herself as well as to others.

2. Falling inside the house. For people who are 65 and above and for women in general, falling—especially inside the house—is the number one cause of spinal cord injuries. To avoid this at home or in the office, make sure that the:

– walkways are clear and free of any debris such as electrical cords that can cause tripping;

– floors are clean especially to greases, water spills, and other liquids so nobody would slip;

– rugs are non-skid to lessen the possibilities of slipping;

– handrails are properly installed in stairways as well as in areas that may be wet such as in bathrooms;

– areas where people usually stay at such as living areas are well lighted.

Through the years, there have been so many developments and advances when it comes to diagnosis, treatments, and rehabilitation of people with SCI, and assistance with CPAP therapy has helped SCI patients suffering also with sleep issues. These advances which include surgery, rehabilitation therapies, drug treatments, stem cells, nerve cell transplantation, and nerve regeneration, help SCI patients to be able to survive and manage all the pain and inconvenience brought by the condition. But, up until this time, no cure for SCI has been discovered. With this case at hand, people are advised to do everything they can to prevent having spinal cord injuries.

What Can Raise Your Blood Pressure?

What Can Raise Your Blood Pressure?

Are you concerned about what might increase your blood pressure? There are quite a few things that can factor into raising your blood pressure. Luckily you can fix many of these with a few lifestyle changes.

If you do not watch your blood pressure frequently, you might not even be aware that you have it. It can creep up on you or just increase over the years. It all depends on many different factors.

If you are overweight you are at an increased risk of developing high blood pressure. You might already know this and you might not. If this is the case for you, consult your doctor and see what he might recommend for you. Losing at least ten pounds can significantly lower your blood pressure.

An unhealthy diet or lack of physical activity or exercise can also put you at risk for high blood pressure. Try to exercise at least thirty minutes a day even if you have to space the time out. Additionally, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients should learn that incorporating breathing exercises will help them throughout the day and well into a restful night. Eating less salt and more vegetables and fruits can help lower your blood pressure as well. Try to incorporate this into your present diet and you will see the results rather quickly.

Stress plays a huge factor in high blood pressure and unfortunately, everyone is stressed at some point in their lives. If you deal with a high amount of stress, consider relaxation techniques. Do whatever you can that you know will calm you down and help relieve stress.

Using tobacco and alcohol raise your blood pressure. If you use either of these consider quitting. If you are unable to quit right away, limit your consumption of alcohol and use of tobacco. There are many over the counter and prescription products to help rid yourself of these habits. Talk with your doctor about any concerns you might have.

Medical conditions also factor into high blood pressure along with your lifestyle. Kidney disease can result in high blood pressure as well as cause it. Sleeping disorders that interrupt your breathing during sleep will also raise your blood pressure. Talking with your doctor about your condition could benefit your disorder along with your blood pressure.

Certain medications and drugs can also raise your blood pressure. Certain types of anti-depressants will do this as well as certain cold medicines. Be aware of oral contraceptives, nasal decongestants, anorexia drugs, and steroids. These can possibly raise your blood pressure as well so talk with your doctor before taking any of them if you are concerned.

While you can control most of the factors that raise your blood pressure there are some you cannot. For instance your race; African Americans are more prone to high blood pressure, people over fifty-five are at a higher risk, and your family history can play a role in your blood pressure as well. While you cannot control these factors you can easily try to help decrease your risk. Watch your diet, exercise, lifestyle habits, etc. Over time this may be very beneficial to you.

High blood pressure can cause strokes and even heart and kidney diseases. Leading a healthier lifestyle can help you live longer and enjoy your time in a healthy state. Talk with your doctor about any questions or concerns you may have concerning your blood pressure. It is never too late to take control.

Breathe Easy CPAP is proud to offer a complete line of CPAP machines, CPAP humidifiers, CPAP masks, CPAP headgear, and all cleaning and CPAP accessories.

Caring for the Caregiver

Caring for the Caregiver

The relationship between an elderly person and his or her caregiver is complex and intense sometimes. But that relationship does not exist in a vacuum. There are a lot of people affected by what is going on when that caregiver goes to that senior citizen’s apartment and give to him or her that one on one attention that is so necessary.

For one thing, the caregiver’s friends, family, and coworkers are affected. Becoming the primary person responsible for the care and well-being of a senior citizen is a peculiar job because it is tremendously demanding and completely unpaid. Caregivers are for the most part children or close relatives of the senior citizen being cared for and they have jobs, families and a full life outside of the time they put in taking care of their parent or parents.

So when that responsibility falls to you, those around you also have to give a little to help you accomplish that goal. But for those who are related to a caregiver, there is a demand for you as well. If mom has to go over to Grandpa’s apartment every night for two or three hours that means mom isn’t home helping you with your homework, making supper or just being available if her little girl needs someone to talk to.

If Dad is gone thirty or forty hours a week taking care of Grandpa, that is the time he is not home providing guidance for his kids, fixing the garbage disposal or making those corny but fun jokes the kids groan about but love. Similarly, the friends and working world of a caregiver are also asked to give up a little or a lot of the mind, the emotions and the time of that caregiver so he or she can go and care for that elderly parent and divert that energy and time in that direction.

For those of us who have a caregiver in our family or part of our social or work circle, in addition to the sacrifices, you can become concerned for your friend or loved one because of the demands of caring for a senior citizen. It’s a job that is taxing to even the strongest adult and one that takes a lot out of your friend or family member. Caregiver burn out is a common syndrome and it doesn’t just affect the caregiver. If your parent, spouse, coworker or friend undergoes a break down from the stress of caring for her mom or dad, that will have an impact on everyone. It is especially more difficult for a caregiver that is also suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) to handle these duties as they are already dealing with sleeping issues of their own.

So there is a compelling need for all of us associated with a caregiver to learn to care for that caregiver to help them and support them in what they are doing. Some specific things you can do are…

1) Let them know you believe in what they are doing. Caregivers often feel very alone and guilty that they are not attending to family and other relationships. By letting he/she know you are 100% behind what they are doing and that you are doing fine, that guilt is removed which makes her know that they can make it.

2) Let them know that they are missed.

3) Pick up the slack. If the caregiver knows that you are taking care of business at home so she/he doesn’t have to worry about it.

4) Let the caregiver sleep in. Maybe even bring her/him breakfast in bed every so often.

5) Pitch in. Go over and help grandma out yourself so it’s not all for mom/dad.

6) An unexpected surprise. Every so often does something to surprise and totally delight mom/dad and give her a fun break from her/his worries of caregiving. A movie out or a limo ride around town can go a long way for a weary caregiver.

If the spouse, the children and friends, and associates of the coworker can keep an eye on her/him to look out for those signs of burn out, it may be our responsibility to jump in and give her/him some support before everything falls apart. By caring for the caregiver, she/he is better able to give attention to that senior citizen she is caring for. So in a way we are all becoming part of the effort to give the caregiver’s mom or dad the best care possible. And that is what community is all about.

Stress Management And Brain Training

Stress Management and Brain Training

Stress kills. Yes, we have heard health experts say that before. Dr. Paul Rosch, a medical scientist, and stress expert said that stress is one of the major reasons for heart disease, cancer, lupus, and respiratory problems. Experiencing constant stress would wear out your mind and body. Brain training is one of the ways to rejuvenate or worn out disposition.

The American Medical Association cited that there are 75% of illnesses attributed to stress. World Health Organization (WHO) identifies stress as the leading health problem among Americans. Physical health is not the only thing affected by stress. Stress lead do depression or anxiety attacks, which translates to trips to the doctor to get a prescription.

There are studies showing that brain training could actually help people who are suffering from depression and anxiety. Neurofeedback or Neurotherapy would determine brainwaves and areas of the brain triggering these problems. Eventually, patients are trained or coached on how to recreate a calm state to overcome symptoms.

However, not only depression and anxiety trigger mental health issues. Chronic stress could also cause neurons or brain cells to die. Chronic and long-term stress could hurt the brain function such as memory and motor skills. Stress could also affect the ability to focus and concentrate.

Relaxation techniques, exercise, and a healthier lifestyle could actually help in relieving stress. However, brain training could help in achieving longer results. Brain training to reduce stress could be in a form of meditation, visualization, or even self-hypnosis. This can be beneficial to your breathing, perfect for CPAP patients.

In a study led by Michael I. Posner, Psychology professor emeritus from the University of Oregon and Yi-Yuan Tang, a professor in the Institute of Neuroinformatics and Laboratory for Body and Mind at the Dalian University of Technology in Dalian, China, showed that meditation could reduce stress. In their study, a group of people who have performed meditation, a form of brain training, could reduce stress, lessen the amount of cortisol released and improve attention within five days of training.

Meditation does not only mean holding a particular position for a long time and chanting. Meditation would also involve relaxing your body, breathing exercises and visual imagery. When meditation is combined with physical exercises, it produces more benefits whether physical or mental. Yoga is a form of combining breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, physical movements, and even imagery.

Brain fitness gyms are also great places for brain training with physical exercises. These gyms also combine nutrition and stress management into their program. What’s interesting is that these centers allow children and adults to enjoy brain challenges.

Children, working adults and the elderly could enhance their brain exercises by engaging in memory games, visual and auditory challenges, and other mentally stimulating activities. Those who have been using brain training as a form to relieve stress have reported numerous benefits like an increase in creativity, energy, better sleep and being relaxed.

Stress should not be considered just as a normal condition or situation. There are different ways on how a person can face and reduce it, brain training could be one of the ways. But it is a matter of making choice and taking action of becoming stress-free.

Cheap Air Filters versus High End Air Filters

Cheap Air Filters versus High End Air Filters: Which Is Best?

If you suffer from allergies or if you just want the air inside your home to be clean, you may be interested in buying an air purifier. If you are, it is important to examine more than just the air purifier itself. Since many air purifiers require replacement filters multiple times a year, they should also be a large part of your decision. Although you may find it most cost-effective, especially in the beginning, to buy an air purifier that uses cheaper air filters, you may want to rethink your decision. This is because there are a number of benefits to using high-end home air filters.

As you likely already know, air purifiers work to clean the air inside a home or a room. They remove potentially harmful particles, which may include pet dander, pollen, dust mites, mold, and secondhand tobacco smoke. As for how these air particulates are removed from the air, it is done so with the assistance of an air purifier. Unfortunately, cheaper quality air purifiers may not produce the best results. There are some brands where the particles are known to pass right through the filter, which results in a reentry into the air. This is not how an air purifier should work. That is why it is important to invest in a quality air purifier, as well as buy a high-end home air filter.

We all want to save money when shopping, it is important to remember that you get what you pay for. As previously stated, air purifiers that use high-end air filters do cost more money, but they will be more than worth it. As for the cost of replacement filters, high-end home air filters will also cost more money, but they are also more than worth it. There is a reason why it is possible to purchase cheaper air filters than the more expensive ones. It is because their quality is not the same. If you suffer from asthma or allergies, you cannot afford to go cheap, as you may be putting your health at risk by doing so.

Remember to always keep your CPAP equipment clean. This will cut down on allergens.

Narcolepsy – A Rare Sleep Disorder

Narcolepsy – A Rare Sleep Disorder

Narcolepsy, a relatively rare sleep disorder, causes people to fall asleep when they do not want to. This is caused by a neurological disorder. The brain sends signals to the body that are sleep-inducing; however, they are sent at inappropriate and unpredictable times. Often it happens when a person is involved in a quiet activity, such as watching a movie or during a meeting. Sometimes a person with this sleep disorder falls asleep while driving, which is obviously extremely dangerous. Others fall asleep while they are eating or talking. The overwhelming need to sleep can come at any hour of the day during any activity.

People suffering from narcolepsy often do not realize how sleepy they are, nor how often they fall asleep. It is often a family member, friend or coworker that convinces them that they need to seek medical help for their sleep disorder.

Narcolepsy has five main symptoms. These are excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, and fragmented sleep, sleep paralysis, cataplexy and hypnagogic hallucinations. Some people with this sleep disorder experience only one symptom but others can experience all five.

Excessive daytime sleepiness is generally the first symptom to appear. Everyone with narcolepsy has this symptom. The feeling of needing to sleep is so strong that sufferers are unable to fend it off, regardless of how hard they try. These sleep attacks, as they are usually called, can happen several times and last for five to ten minutes.

Insomnia and fragmented sleep are a very common symptom of this sleep disorder. People with narcolepsy often have a very difficult time falling asleep at night, even though they fall asleep easily throughout the day. When they do fall asleep at night they wake up often and do not follow a typical REM / non REM sleep pattern.

Sleep paralysis occurs in about half of the people that suffer from this sleep disorder. For several minutes before falling to sleep or waking up, the person with this symptom cannot talk or move.

The loss of muscle function while awake is cataplexy. These episodes are usually very short in length. Over half of the people with narcolepsy experience this symptom of this sleep disorder. They are caused by a part of REM not functioning correctly. Often, episodes are brought on by anger, laughter or any other strong emotion. Sometimes knees buckle, necks and jaws become weak or the person may fall to the ground. Even though the person looks like they are asleep and cannot talk, they are fully awake and aware of what is happening.

A hypnagogic hallucination is experiencing very vivid and often frightening sounds, images or physical sensations. These occur from dreams just before the person is falling asleep or waking up. It is very difficult for a person with this sleep disorder to distinguish between the dream and reality. These hallucinations often have very dangerous themes and are extremely frightening. Often they are accompanied by sleep paralysis.

There are also several lesser symptoms of narcolepsy. These include blurred vision, migraine headaches, memory or concentration problems and automatic behavior. An apostate of automatic behavior can last for several minutes. During that time a person with this sleep disorder will perform a routine task. The task is often done incorrectly, such as placing a turkey in the dishwasher or writing past the end of a page.

Narcolepsy can be diagnosed and treated with various drugs. If left untreated this sleep disorder can ruin a person’s life.

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms please consult your physician. If your Doctor orders a sleep study and it is found that you would benefit from CPAP Therapy, the Dream Team at Advanced Sleep Therapy will be there to assist you.

Sleep Apnea is a severe sleep disorder that can be life-threatening and at times deadly. Individuals with sleep apnea frequently fall asleep usually; however, as soon as their asleep, their ability to breathe is blocked. It is the underlying reason for health problems such as heart problem, stroke, pulmonary hypertension and systemic hypertension.

There are several types of treatments for sleep apnea, both noninvasive and surgical. The first line of treatment for someone suffering from moderate to extreme sleep apnea is called positive respiratory tract pressure. The force of the air circulation must be figured out by a sleep service technician during an overnight sleep research study.

Oral devices are likewise used to treat this sleep disorder in mild to moderate cases. Dental gadgets fall into two basic categories: mandibular, or lower jaw, advancing devices or tongue retaining gadgets.

Medications are typically not a successful form of treatment for many people with sleep apnea. Many of them do take antidepressants and mondafinal.

Supplemental oxygen is often utilized in conjunction with a CPAP machine. Oxygen alone cannot prevent the collapse of the respiratory tract or sleep fragmentation. Nevertheless, oxygen can prevent the drop in the level of blood oxygen that happens when the respiratory tract collapses.

How to Use the SoClean 2

SoClean 2

Cleaning your CPAP equipment may seem intimidating at first, do you submerged everything in water? Will you break something if you do it wrong? Sometimes, keeping CPAP equipment clean can be so scary that sleep apnea sufferers give up their therapy altogether. We’d like to prevent that. Untreated sleep apnea is dangerous and may lead to serious health problems such as heart disease. If you’re hoping to find a quick and simple way to clean your CPAP equipment, you may be interested in the SoClean 2 CPAP cleaner.

Forget the Chemicals and try Activated Oxygen

SoClean 2 uses the power of activated oxygen to breakdown organic compounds. Activated oxygen is a stronger form of its original compound and is often used to purify water and clean hotel and food service equipment.

Everyday we breathe in oxygen made up of two atoms. This simple oxygen is the base for activated oxygen, which is made up of three atoms of oxygen. The SoClean 2 uses a generator to break down the two atom form of oxygen so that it may reform into the stronger three atom activated version. This activated oxygen gets to work immediately to clean your CPAP equipment.

How to Use the SoClean 2

To use the SoClean 2, just place your CPAP mask still attached to the hose into the vessel. There’ll be a special divot in the cleaner to accommodate the hose.

The motor in the SoClean 2 begins by running water containing activated oxygen into the vessel and through the mask and hose. This water collects in the reservoir or water chamber once it’s been used to do its job.

After five to fifteen minutes, the SoClean 2 has done its job and has sanitized not only your CPAP equipment, but the inside walls of the SoClean 2 as well. Allow your CPAP equipment to rest in the SoClean 2 for another two hours, so that it dries before attaching it back to your CPAP machine.

Sleep Apnea, Its Treatment, and Gastroesophageal Reflux

Sleep Apnea, Its Treatment, and Gastroesophageal Reflux

There’s no denying the connection between sleep apnea, a sleep disorder which results in episodes without oxygen while asleep, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD. Between fifty and seventy-five percent of people suffering from sleep apnea have also been diagnosed with GERD, a medical condition known for causing heartburn, sore throats, and a chronic dry cough. For those who’ve been struggling with GERD and sleep apnea before treatment, continuous positive airway pressure therapy can help both conditions. Unfortunately, the use of a CPAP machine, the standard treatment for sleep apnea, may also cause GERD or GERD-like symptoms, an issue known as aerophagia.

What is Aerophagia?

Aerophagia sometimes occurs as a result of continuous positive airway pressure therapy. Normally, the pressurized air from a CPAP machine keeps narrowed or obstructed airways open so that breathing is not interrupted while the user is asleep. Sometimes this pressurized air inadvertently enters a person’s stomach and bowel causing gas-related discomfort. Often, this problem causes so much frustration that sleep apnea sufferers discontinue their CPAP treatment all together.

Solving CPAP related GERD

If you’re GERD symptoms are the result of CPAP therapy, talk to your physician. It may be that your pressure setting is too high and air is entering your esophagus. Nose breathers may consider switching from a full face mask to a nasal mask. If you’re a mouth breather, try teaching yourself to fall asleep with your bottom teeth lightly pressed against the top of your mouth.

This reduces the likelihood of air leaving the windpipe. You can also ask your physician about medications to reduce gas. Gas-X is available over the counter and works to relieve many of the symptoms of GERD.

Still having problems? You may want to contact a sleep specialist. Advanced Sleep Therapy has created a team of health care professionals dedicated to diagnosing, initiating, and maintain sleep apnea treatment. We’ll do what it takes to solve your discomfort because we believe that better sleep means better health.

Is Using a CPAP Machine the Same as Using Oxygen?

Is Using a CPAP Machine the Same as Using Oxygen?

Sleep Apnea is a medical condition characterized by periods throughout the night where a person stops breathing, either due to a lack of brain signals, a type of sleep apnea called central sleep apnea, or narrowed or blocked airways, otherwise known as obstructive sleep apnea. These periods can occur up to hundreds of times a night and result in the sufferer being deprived of oxygen. The treatment for this oxygen debt? Continuous positive airway pressure therapy via a CPAP machine. If you’ve been diagnose with sleep apnea and are on the look out for treatment supplies, you may be wondering what a CPAP machine really does for you. Is it a way to deliver oxygen similar to an oxygen tank or is it something else entirely?

How Does a CPAP Work?

In most cases, sleep apnea is the result of a narrowed or obstructed airway. A person’s windpipe may bend under pressure from a heavy neck or chest or weakened muscles around the throat. In order to keep this airway open, a CPAP machine uses a motor to generate pressurized air, delivered via a CPAP mask, to keep the windpipe wind open.

Where Does Your CPAP Machine Get the Delivered Air?

The pressurized air delivered to the CPAP user is not oxygen from a tank. Rather, it’s taken in from the room and filtered before being delivered. While this air is made with oxygen, it’s not the same oxygen you’d receive from a tank. Rather, it’s simply room air you’d normally breath in. Because your CPAP machine also acts as a filter and may even use a humidifier, this air is also cleaner and more comfortable to breath during the night.

What if I’ve Got Sleep Apnea?

If you’ve been diagnosed with sleep apnea, it’s important that you receive treatment for your disorder. CPAP machines are painless and effective in stopping the symptoms of sleep apnea and decreasing your risk of developing other serious medical conditions related to the disorder. If you’ve got questions about your sleep apnea, contact us at Advanced Sleep Therapy for help. We’d love to answer your sleep related questions as well as direct you to quality sleep apnea treatment supplies.

The Link Between Restless Leg Syndrome and Hypertension

The Link Between Restless Leg Syndrome and Hypertension

Our bodies are strange things. Every organ, every blood vessel, and every cell is linked to the rest of the body in ways we are still working to understand. While it’s easy to see the correlation between some diseases, say obesity and sleep apnea, the relationship between some disorders aren’t as easy to understand. Since we here at CPAPteam.com are so dedicated to sleep, we’re also looking to understand the connection between restless leg syndrome and hypertension, or high blood pressure.

What is Restless Legs Syndrome?

Often precipitating insomnia, restless leg syndrome is a disorder that makes you feel like you’ve just got to move your legs to relieve the frustrating sensations of tickling, burning, or general discomfort felt while trying to fall asleep. Women are more likely to suffer from restless legs syndrome than men.

Restless legs syndrome can be exhausting and frustrating too because for those who’ve never experienced it, restless leg syndrome just sounds unreal.

What causes restless legs syndrome? For some, it’s a side effect of their SSRI medication. For others, it may be a sign of poor circulation. Speaking of poor circulation, this is where hypertension comes in.

Restless Legs Syndrome and High Blood Pressure

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, occurs when your blood pressure is routinely over 140/90 mmHg. Hypertension leads to cardiovascular damage possibly causing heart failure or stroke. So what does this have to do with restless legs? Maybe a lot. According to Harvard Medical School’s journal on hypertension, women with restless leg syndrome have an increased chance for developing hypertension. This risk can be as high as 41 percent! Studies also showed that the more frequent and severe a woman’s restless legs symptoms were, the more likely she was to have hypertension.

Some evidence also links restless legs syndrome to sleep apnea. If you believe you may be suffering from restless legs syndrome, ask your physician to assess you for sleep apnea. If you’ve got sleep apnea, treatment via a CPAP machine may help manage the feelings of pins and needles and uncomfortable legs.

Not Worth the Risks: Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Not Worth the Risks: Obstructive Sleep Apnea

There’s a laundry list of consequences associated with untreated sleep apnea: high blood pressure, weight gain, diabetes, and serious cardiovascular events like stroke. Yet, illness isn’t the only problem associated with the sleep disorder. Obstructive sleep apnea, a medical condition in which your breathing is interrupted hundreds of times a night, may also be putting you at risk of injury during a motor vehicle accident, especially if you’re not receiving treatment.

Interruptions in Sleep Lead to Sleep Deprivation

Your body is smart. While you’re sleeping, your brain is standing guard. When the brain senses oxygen deprivation as a result of a blocked airway during, it alerts the rest of the body to the problem, forcing you to wake. These moments are usually short and you may not recall ever waking in the first place. These events are called “micro-arousals” and occur hundreds of times a night. Soon, you’re not getting enough sleep and are feeling exhausted and unable to focus during the day.

If You’re Not Treating Your Sleep Apnea, Driving is Risky

One study found that football players with sleep apnea had slower response times, meaning they’re not as efficient on the field. Researchers believe the same is true for us: untreated obstructive sleep apnea likely lowers our response times too. In fact, reports show that those suffering from the sleep disorder are more than twice as likely to suffer injury in a car accident. Having sleep apnea may even affect your commercial driver’s license. If you’ve got one for your job, you’ll likely need to prove that you’re receiving treatment for the condition.

To keep yourself safe, remember: if you’re feeling too tired to drive, don’t.

Ignoring Your Sleep Apnea Isn’t Worth the Risk

Death as the result of a motor vehicle accident is the leading cause of accidental injury fatalities. If you’re not treating your sleep apnea, you’re welcoming the risk of injury and the illnesses associated health complications. While starting treatment for sleep apnea may be intimidating at first, investing in continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP therapy, is worth the effort. Your physical well-being, career, and life all deserve treatment.

Protect your health by starting CPAP therapy as soon as your primary health care provider suggests it. At  Breatheeasycpap.com, we’re obsessed with keeping you healthy. We’re a quality medical supply company made up of respiratory specialists who are all prepared to find the perfect CPAP system for you. Don’t ignore your health. Why Track My Sleep Apnea Treatment?

Why Track My Sleep Apnea Treatment?

If you suffer from sleep apnea, you probably know that it’s a condition which causes snoring but, more importantly, episodes of breathlessness during the night. These moments without oxygenation cause weight gain, high blood pressure, memory loss, and concentration problems. Treatment of your sleep apnea is an essential part of preventing and putting a stop to the progression of these life-threatening complications.

Most health care providers look to continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP therapy, to treat your sleep apnea. It’s painless, effective, and, to your partner’s relief, it stops snoring immediately. CPAP machine technology is consistently improving, and some of the new CPAP machines being released, like the ResMed AirSense 10, use data trackers to collect information of your CPAP therapy. Some of these newer machines even come with sleep tracking apps to make controlling and paying attention to your treatment a breeze.

Why Would My Healthcare Provider Need Information from My CPAP?

The data collected during the night while you’re using your sleep apnea machine includes the pressure needed to keep your airway unobstructed, the number of breaths you’ve taken, the number of apneic episodes you’ve experienced during the night, and the time between these events. Most new CPAP machines will send information to your smartphone device so that you can give this information to your healthcare provider who’ll evaluate the data received. Your physician will ensure that you’re receiving the adequate level of care needed to prevent sleep apnea episodes and the conditions complications.

Check your CPAP machine’s manual to find out what sort of data collecting is available. CPAP manufacturer’s like HDM and Philips have created smartphone apps for their models. You can search for these in your smartphone’s application store under Sleepmapper and Nitelog.

Showing Compliance with Your Sleep Tracker

In order to receive replacement parts for your CPAP machine, your insurance company may require you to prove compliance with your sleep apnea treatment. Usually, this means that you can prove that you have worn your CPAP machine for at least 4 hours every day. Smart CPAP machines like the AirSense 10 Elite is just one of the options to track your data that you can easily send your usage information to your provider or insurance company.

If you’re not sure whether or not your current machine has data tracking capabilities or you’d like to make sure that you purchase the correct CPAP machine, get in touch with us here at Breatheeasycpap.com. We’ll ensure that you get your money’s worth and the CPAP machine with all the amenities you need.

How Has the Affordable Care Act Affected Sleep Apnea Treatment?

How Has the Affordable Care Act Affected Sleep Apnea Treatment?

Health insurance can feel like one confusing maze-coverage under the affordable care act is no different. To understand how the Affordable Care Act impacts sleep apnea treatment, it’s important to understand that this system is results-focused, meaning in order to get initial and continued coverage, patients and their health care team must prove that their medical needs are addressed in a manner that will get real results.

Is sleep apnea a preexisting condition?

Some good news about the Affordable Care Act: insurance coverage can’t discriminate against you if you’ve already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. While co-pays and deductibles may have changed with the Affordable Care Act, coverage shouldn’t. With this system, your preexisting condition shouldn’t affect your health care.

Has testing for sleep apnea changed?

Testing for sleep apnea at home, rather than in a more expensive sleep laboratory, is becoming more common. This is because it’s a much more cost effective diagnostic technique and works well for most uncomplicated cases of sleep apnea. To participate in an at home sleep test, your physician will send you home with a device created to measure blood oxygen levels, airflow, body position, and snoring.

If this test comes back inconclusively, your physician will then set you up with an appointment for a laboratory sleep test. A bit more paperwork to authorize these exams may be necessary. More paperwork means more time between diagnosis and treatment.

Will I have continuous coverage?

As previously mentioned, the Affordable Care Act is focused on results. In line with this mission, as a user of a continued positive airway pressure machine, you’ll need to prove that you’re using it regularly. Usually, this means that you’ll need to prove that it’s worn for at least 4 hours every day. Smart CPAP machines like the AirSense 10 Elite tracks your data for you so that you can easily send your usage information to your provider or insurance company. There are also fitness trackers and phone applications that you might find useful.

In the end, your coverage will depend on your specific insurance provider. You can research the Affordable Care Act here or chat with us about what your insurance will help you purchase at BreatheeasyCPAP.com.

Sleep Apnea and CPAP Bloating

Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP therapy, is an excellent treatment of sleep apnea. Without this gold standard therapy, sleep apnea sufferers are at a heightened risk of developing serious medical conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease. After beginning CPAP machine therapy, most people feel great. They are getting more sleep, waking feeling refreshed, and feel at peace knowing they’re preventing these terrible health problems. Unfortunately, you may run into some difficulties with your treatment somewhere down the line. Bloating, burping, and intestinal gas are some of the most frequent complaints after CPAP use.

Is Your Gas Related to CPAP Therapy?

Your CPAP alleviates sleep apnea by delivering a continuous air source to keep your airway open. The potential drawback to this airflow is that sometimes the air accidentally flows where it isn’t supposed to, like your stomach. Your trachea, or airway, is very close to your esophagus, the tube leading to your stomach. When air accidentally flows to your belly rather than your lungs, you might experience air trapping and gas.

If you’re worried that you might have issues with this swallowing of air, or aerophagia, look for symptoms like an abnormally bloated abdomen, burping, farting, and stomach pain after CPAP use. Although the risk for serious damage related to this condition is low, it’s frustrating, uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing. Plus, if air is being delivered to your stomach at a greater rate than your lungs, your sleep apnea treatment isn’t going to be effective.

How to Prevent CPAP Bloating and Gas

After experiencing abdominal discomfort, many CPAP users wonder if their CPAP mask is causing their gas. Most likely, the type of mask you are using will not be affecting your gas. Your best bet will be to look elsewhere for the cause. The first step to preventing CPAP bloating is to make sure that you have undergone a “titration study” with your doctor. This study is part of an in lab sleep study where respiratory technicians measure the exact pressure setting you require in order to properly treat your sleep apnea. Call your physician and ask if this was performed. If it wasn’t, your CPAP pressure setting may be too high. Too high of pressures cause air to push passed the airway and into the stomach.

Another common cause of CPAP gas is sleeping position. Laying on an incline can prevent kinked airways and is usually an easy fix to implement. You can simply put a few boards under your mattress to build a slope to your bed or buy a mattress with incline settings.

Some doctors suggest using over the counter gas control medications to manage your gas issues. If these don’t work, they can also prescribe stronger medications like Prilosec. Make sure that you are discussing all of your symptoms with your doctor, they may be able to rule out other causes of gas so that you aren’t wrongly blaming CPAP treatment.

You can also ask other experts about possible solutions to your CPAP bloating. The health care professionals at Breatheeasycpap.com have a lot of experience solving CPAP related problems. They’ll help you search for the best sleep apnea supplies to make treatment more comfortable because they believe that treating your illness should be comfortable and empowering. As the most popular mask style, nasal masks allow for a greater visibility for sleep apnea sufferers who like to fall asleep while watching television or reading in bed. ResMed’s version of the nasal mask is the market leader by far. The AirFit N10 is has easily adjustable headgear clips so that taking it on and off it a breeze. It provides a clear line of sight, again allowing for freedom of movement. Most importantly, the AirFit N10 provides an excellent seal by taking advantage of Spring Air Cushion technology. A perfect seal means perfectly effective treatment.

AirFit F10 Full Face Mask

For mouth breathers and sleep apnea sufferers with pressure levels about 14cm H20, a full face mask is the way to go. For many, full face masks provide peace of mind. The larger surface area allows for a greater area of pressure dispersion, keeping your airway unobstructed all through the night. The problem with many full face masks, however, is that their larger nature blocks your line of sight, and they can be fairly loud. This isn’t the case with the AirFit F10, it’s build allows for an open visual field and, with it’s ability to maintain a great air seal, it’s really quiet. Not only that, ResMed’s full face mask is 15% lighter than it’s leading competitor!

Where to Buy Top Quality CPAP Masks

If you’re hoping to invest in your health, buying a highly recommended sleep apnea mask from the AirFit series is a no-brainer. Breatheeasycpap.com is an American based CPAP supply company who takes pride in supplying sleep apnea sufferers with only the best respiratory care equipment. Vivid Dreams and CPAP Therapy

When you’re suffering from sleep apnea, your brain is waking you hundreds of times a night begging for you to start breathing again. We know these microarousals are a lifesaving measure which prevent you from succumbing to a complete lack of oxygen, but they’re exhausting. These frequent wakings impact your sleep in every way, right down to the way that you dream.

Whether you’re dreams are less frequent than ever or just too intense and terrifying, your untreated sleep apnea might be responsible.

Is My CPAP Machine Making Me Dream More?

Quite frequently, people with untreated sleep apnea have no clue that their dreams have been affected. It’s not until after they’ve started continuous positive airway pressure therapy that they’re having wild dreams. Some CPAP users describes episodes of climbing mountain or eating huge delicious meals. It’s easy to blame these sudden apparitions on your CPAP therapy, but the truth is, you’re dreams are one-hundred percent normal. Before you began treating your sleep apnea, not only were you at risk for developing all sorts of serious illnesses like diabetes and kidney disease, but you’re constant need to breathe was keeping you from staying in the REM, or rapid eye movement, stage of sleep. The REM stage brings about your exciting nighttime visions but also sorts your unconscious mind. Without it, you’re likely to feel exhausted and simply out of sorts.

Nightmares and Sleep Apnea

If you’re one of the unfortunate sleep apnea sufferers who experiences nightmares, you’ll be pleased to know that there is an end in sight. A controlled study found that regular use of a CPAP machine put a complete stop to those nightmares and intensely anxious dreams. Although you’re probably going to have more active dreams of a happier nature for a while, their lucidity will decrease as you get used to your CPAP. The same study found that a decrease in dream recollection was a good sign that a person’s treatment had normalized.

There are Plenty of Reasons to Seek Sleep Apnea Treatment

You’re problems with dreaming are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to untreated sleep apnea. If you’re not undergoing CPAP therapy or are having a difficult time committing to your therapy, you’re at risk of developing serious health problems. Sleep apnea leads to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and even stroke. It also leaves you feeling more exhausted than you should be during the day, meaning you’re simply not living your life to its fullest!

Start Your Sleep Apnea Treatment and Stick to It

Breatheeasycpap.com is a small business with a big mission. It’s been created out of a passion to promote health and comfort for sleep apnea patients just like you. They’ve got experienced respiratory health care members on staff who are ready to help you tackle your sleep apnea and keep your health on the right track. Little Bits and Pieces: What to Know About Your CPAP Filter

We might be missing the point when we tell others how simple there sleep apnea treatment will be for them. “It’s just three parts,” we say. “The machine, a hose, and a sleep apnea mask!” In reality, we know it’s a bit more complex than that but we don’t mention it because once you start figuring your own treatment out, you’ll begin to notice the other very important parts to your equipment all by yourself. There are small parts to your CPAP therapy that make a big difference. Whether it’s the fabric on your sleep apnea mask head gear, the type cushions you use, or your CPAP machine filters, these little bits make therapy comfortable, clean, and effective. They’re all important, but when it comes to fighting dust, bacteria, and respiratory viruses, your CPAP filters are something you’ll want to know more about.

Why Does My CPAP Have a Filter?

Although they seem small, your CPAP filter’s job is seriously important. Without a working CPAP filter, your machine is unlikely to be able to maintain steady pressure, not to mention you could get a mouthful of dust and pollen. Keeping small pieces of airborne material from entering your machine is your filter’s job, and this little piece of foam, plastic, or disposable filter paper does this job quite well.

Although every CPAP machine is different, most of the CPAP filters will be easy to find. Look in your user manual for your CPAP machine’s exact location. If you have a special “In-line” filter, you’ll likely be installing it yourself. These devices are used in conjunction with your standard filter and add extra protection against viral and bacterial infection.

How Often Should I Clean My Filter

Generally, reusable filters last about half of a year, but it’s always best to keep an eye out for wear and tear before then. Whenever your washable filter begins to appear gray or shows any other sign of wear, it’s a good time to wash it. Use a mild dish detergent and gently scrub the sides of your filter. Rinse it thoroughly and lay it on a clean dish towel to dry.

If you’re using disposable filters, look for gathered dust and, again, a gray hue to the filter. Most manufacturers suggest replacing these CPAP filters every three months. It’s easy enough to do, simply remove, throw it away, and replace with a new filter.

Where to Buy Replacement Filters

Unfortunately, CPAP machine filters are not considered one size fits all. Whether you’re using a CPAP machine made by Fisher and Paykel or Respironics, check your user manual for the exact specifications to look for when buying your filters. Fortunately, the staff at a trustworthy CPAP supply store will be well versed on which filters belong with which machines. At Breatheeasycpap.com’s online storefront, you can contact their staff for help, see pictures of your CPAP machine and its filters, as well as purchase any of your other sleep apnea supply needs. It’s there passion to keep you breathing clean, fresh air all night long.

What Do You Do With Old CPAP Supplies?

As with most things, your sleep apnea supplies have a lifespan. The amount of wear and tear a person inflicts upon their CPAP machine and sleep apnea mask varies from one user to the next. For some, oils on their skin breakdown the mask more quickly, while others struggle with the elastic bands or velcro straps degrading on their headgear. Following your equipment’s instructions for use and remembering to clean your mask daily should increase the lifetime of your gear.

Watch for Cracks or Breakdown on Your CPAP Mask

Rather than replace your mask after a set period of time, try replacing your sleep apnea mask when it begins to show any telltale signs of aging. If you’re experiencing more air leaks at night or noticing cracks or discolorations to your CPAP masks padding or silicone, it may be time to find a new mask. Philips Respironics has a great table available on their website that explains the suggested CPAP machine equipment replacement schedule as well as Medicare’s schedule if you are curious. You may be surprised to find out that most insurances offer fairly liberal replacement schedules, meaning you may be eligible to purchase a fresh CPAP treatment mask every three months. Your CPAP machine itself is expected to last much longer, generally around five years.

Where Can I Send My Old supplies?

There are many places online claiming to get you cash for your old CPAP equipment. When you arrive at one of these websites, proceed with caution. At the very least, these sorts of sites can be financial scams but are sometimes even illegal. However, some sleep apnea sufferers say that they’ve had luck with Secondwindcpap.com. Still, your safest and most generous option is to donate your sleep apnea machine to one the many sleep apnea charities on the lookout for them.

Former Football star Reggie White passed away in 2004, his death linked to Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Since his passing, his family has created a charity in his honor: The Reggie White Sleep Disorders Research and Education Foundation, Inc. Here, you can donate your old CPAP equipment so that all people can treat their sleep apnea regardless of socioeconomic status or insurance coverage. Another similar program is conducted by The American Sleep Apnea Association. Here you can easily donate or request help obtaining CPAP supplies.

What Matters Most When Replacing My CPAP Equipment?

Just before donating your old CPAP machine or sleep apnea mask, take time to evaluate your equipment’s performance. What did you like or dislike about your machine? Was it too loud or bulky? If so, you might want to consider purchasing a smaller, even travel sized CPAP machine such as The Transcend, which is available online.

Has your doctor recommended a change in your pressure settings? If you’re currently using nasal pillows and are anticipating an increase in your pressure levels, you may need to use a mask with fuller coverage. An Airfit F10 mask might be the best choice when looking to invest in a sturdy and effective sleep apnea mask. You can find either of these CPAP supplies at Breatheeasycpap.com. The health care professionals at this genuine online storefront are ready to help you choose your replacement sleep apnea treatment equipment today.

Why Do I Need a Prescription for CPAP Therapy?

Snoring is one of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea, a disorder where breathing stops for several seconds or even a few minutes throughout the night. If you’re snoring or having any other of the symptoms related to sleep apnea such as morning headaches, dry mouth, or daytime sleepiness, you may be tempted to treat yourself at home. Some people try buying a continuous positive airway pressure machine without a prescription, but if you’re considering this step, be careful. Sleep apnea is a serious condition requiring medical observation. Treating yourself is not recommended by trustworthy CPAP suppliers or medical professionals.

Sleep Studies Determine Your Treatment Needs

The biggest risk taken by investing in a CPAP machine without a prescription is the likely possibility that your treatment simply won’t be effective. To determine the appropriate treatment, a doctor will normally have you undergo a sleep study. This process discovers the CPAP machine setting required to keep the your individual airway open. Without undergoing diagnostics, you cannot know for certain that you’re properly treating your sleep apnea. Poorly treated sleep apnea places you at an increased risk for serious adverse health conditions like kidney disease, diabetes, or stroke, and investing in a CPAP system before medical evaluation can be dangerous.

Monitor Your Treatment

On top of ensuring that your CPAP therapy is at the appropriate pressure setting, a physician will also monitor your sleep apnea’s progress throughout treatment. Occasionally, your health care practitioner may ask that you raise or lower the forced air delivered through your sleep apnea tubing in order to maintain an open windpipe.

Your doctor will also screen your sleep apnea therapy for adverse effects. Most CPAP masks cause irritation with first use, especially when not fitted properly. Continuous irritation is frustrating and may make you discontinue therapy, something both you and your physician must work together to avoid.

Other side effects of CPAP therapy include bloating, eye and nasal infections due to frequent drying, and TM joint problems. If you’re suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, your doctor will also need to monitor you for the development of central sleep apnea. Although rare, the development of central sleep apnea occurs when your brain gets confused by your unusually open airway and stops sending messages to your lungs telling them to breath.

Sleep Studies Make for Better Treatment

If you’re concerned that you may have sleep apnea, make an appointment with your health care practitioner. First they’ll ask you several screening questions to evaluate your risk. They’ll ask whether or not you smoke, drink alcohol, or take certain medications. They’ll also factor in your weight and age. When your physician determines that you’re at risk, they’ll most likely enroll you in a sleep study. These studies are painless diagnostic tests that keep tabs on your breathing, pulse, and oxygen levels while you sleep. Sleep studies, or polysomnography, are considered the gold standard for diagnosing sleep apnea.

If you’re diagnosed with sleep apnea, a physician will likely prescribe you with CPAP therapy and encourage you to start treatment as soon as possible. Visit a reliable CPAP machine and sleep apnea mask supply store like Breatheeasycpap.com. The medical professionals on staff are available by phone to discuss your personal CPAP machine options and style preferences. With your health care team, an excellent CPAP supply store, and your personal commitment to treatment, your sleep apnea doesn’t stand a chance.

Pets in the bedroom

For ten thousand years, humans have kept animals as companions. Today, 65% of homes in America have pets and about most of these pet owners sleep with their furry friends. If you’re one of the millions of Americans who suffer from sleeping problem, you might wonder if your pet is causing poor sleep.

How Could Having a Pet in the Bedroom Ruin My Sleep?

If you’re finding it tough to get a good night’s rest, many doctors believe that your pet needs to stay out of the bedroom. Since 20% of dogs snore and most cats move around throughout the night, it only makes sense that your sleep could be affected. Another potential threat to adequate sleep is that sometimes your love for animals might keep you uncomfortable at night. Like most people who sleep with their pets, you’ll likely recall a time where you avoided rolling over in bed because you didn’t want to disturb your pet. This behavior may be why there’s evidence showing that having a pet in your bed makes it harder to fall asleep.

Can Having a Pet in the Bedroom Improve Sleep?

Opinions about whether pets are affecting sleep are still evolving. One survey conducted by Mayo Clinic found that 20% of pet owners reported that their sleep was interrupted by their pets, but 41% said pets improved their sleep.

How your pet impacts your sleep varies depending on several factors. For instance, large pets might be disturbing for some while providing warmth for others. The species of the pet may have an impact too. Dogs tend to settle down better at night where as cats often move about the room creating more opportunities for light sleepers to be disturbed.

Many animals give their owners a sense of emotional security. They might feel safer because of their watch dog or less lonely with a cuddling friend or purring companion. On top of the emotional aspects of having a strong relationship with your pet, the health benefits of animal ownership shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact, research suggests that having a dog can lower your blood pressure!

When the Mayo Clinic’s study concluded, it found that animals usually have little to no effect on their owners during the night and may even improve their sleep.

Maybe It’s Sleep Apnea

If you’re still waking up feeling exhausted in the morning, whether your pet is in bed or not, you might want to consider seeing your doctor. People with a common medical condition known as sleep apnea might commonly wake at night and feel worn down in the morning. They also tend to snore and have morning headaches. If your sleeping difficulties are related to sleep apnea, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure can help.

When your physician prescribes CPAP treatment, shop for your equipment from a retailer who takes your condition seriously. The respiratory therapists at Breatheeasycpap.com will help you find the most appropriate and effective CPAP mask style for you. They also carry sleep apnea accessories that make treatment as comfortable as possible.

One of the greatest things about CPAP therapy is that you’ll stop snoring immediately, meaning both you and your pet will wake feeling rested.

COPD and Sleep Apnea

COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is often caused by smoking tobacco products, receiving second hand smoke, and sometimes pollution. COPD causes oxygen levels to drop and creates a chain reaction of respiratory and cardiovascular health problems. COPD can be difficult to manage and even deadly. If you suffer from COPD and have just found out that you’re experiencing sleep apnea, here are some things you should know.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea is a condition that health care officials consider a “Sleep Disordered Breathing” condition. Sleep apnea results in hundreds of short moments during the night where a person stops breathing for seconds to minutes at a time. Sleep apnea is known for causing snoring but has much more serious implications. Untreated sleep apnea can result in high blood pressure, renal disease, and diabetes.

Overlap Syndrome

Though they both affect the respiratory system, it is unlikely that COPD and sleep apnea cause one another. Still, they frequently do occur at the same time, and, when this happens, we call it “overlap syndrome.”

Overlap syndrome is concerning to health care practitioners because both COPD and Sleep Apnea cause a person to become deprived of normal oxygen levels for long periods of time. Separate from one another, these medical conditions cause negative changes all across the body, ultimately resulting in the development of high blood pressure and stroke. Overlap Syndrome is thought by many researchers to amplify or increase the risks of these developments.

CPAP Therapy as Part of Overlap Syndrome Care

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP therapy, is the recommended treatment for persons with Overlap Syndrome. CPAP therapy is delivered via a machine and a sleep apnea mask using forced air to keep the windpipe open overnight. CPAP therapy is shown to reduce the risk of developing the grave consequences of both COPD and Sleep Apnea.

If you have COPD, your health care practitioner may have recommended that you be careful not to give yourself “too much” at home oxygen therapy to prevent accidentally causing“hypoxic drive.” Hypoxic drive occurs when COPD patients take in an unnecessary level of oxygen resulting in further breathing difficulties. The good news for COPD sufferers is that there are no studies showing a risk of developing this condition after CPAP use.

Use Quality CPAP Equipment to Treat Your Sleep Apnea

Talk to your physician about their recommendations for your individual sleep apnea treatment and CPAP mask styles. Purchase your CPAP system from a reliable retailer who is invested in your respiratory health. Breatheeasycpap.com is an example of an upstanding CPAP supply company whose mission has always been to put you and your health first.

The nurses, respiratory therapists, and doctors in charge of their online storefront make careful choices in selecting cost effective and quality conscious sleep apnea treatment products. Don’t delay beginning treatment, if you’re managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sleep apnea at the same time, using a CPAP machine can, without question, save your life.

Don’t Let Cleaning Scare You From Sleep Apnea Treatment!

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP therapy is the most frequently prescribed medical treatment of Sleep Apnea, a disorder which disrupts normal breathing during sleep. People who use CPAP therapy see results right away and prevent serious long term health issues associated with the disorder. Regardless of facts suggesting that CPAP therapy is an important tool in sleep apnea treatment, about half of patients prescribed CPAP machines quit using them after one to three weeks.

If you are new to using a CPAP system, you may find the care involved with keeping the CPAP machine, sleep apnea mask, humidifier, and tubing clean very intimidating. At Breatheeasycpap.com we hope to relieve you of some of the worry surrounding care of your CPAP equipment. Here are a few things you should know.

Warm, Moist Environments are Bacterial Breeding Grounds

Although you can use a CPAP system without a warm air humidifier, we don’t suggest it. Humidified air prevents dry, sore nostrils, and nose bleeds from the forced air delivered by your CPAP. Although a warm air humidifier is a fabulous tool in promoting comfort for sleep apnea sufferers, mold and bacteria love the warm and moist environment created by the device.

Some studies have found colonized bacteria responsible for Rhinosinsusitis living within CPAP tubing, although clinically this wasn’t shown to affect many users.

Other studies found that the risk of developing pneumonia is higher in sleep apnea patients, even those who don’t use a CPAP machine. But, this same study also found that the risk in older adults is especially elevated when they use CPAP devices.

Whether or not you are more susceptible to disease from the use of a sleep apnea machine, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and keep your CPAP treatment supplies clean.

Daily Cleaning

The first step to cleaning your CPAP supplies is to read your equipment manuals. Your equipment instructions may present you with specialized cleaning suggestions or precautions regarding the device’s care.

After you’ve read the manuals, start each morning by wiping off your mask. You can use a soft cloth with a mild detergent to wipe the inside of you sleep apnea mask or you can clean with specially designed CPAP cleaning wipes sold at many CPAP supply retailers. These wipes are easy to use and great for quick cleanings.

Make sure to check your humidifier and empty any leftover water. Dry the inside of the chamber and wait until the evening to refill it with distilled water.

Weekly Cleaning

We suggest cleaning your entire CPAP system at least once a week and daily if you’ve been suffering from the flu, a cold, or any other illness. One option may be to use a device called SoClean 2 CPAP Cleaner and Sanitizer sold at BreatheeasyCPAP.com. This machine utilizes activated oxygen to perform a deep cleaning on your CPAP mask and tubing.

If you prefer cleaning by hand, you can fill your sink with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish detergent. Take your CPAP tubing and mask and gently swirl them back and forth in the soapy water. Afterwards, rinse your equipment thoroughly and lightly dry them with a soft towel.

Take Care of Your Quality CPAP Supplies

When you invest in your CPAP system, be sure to purchase a quality machine and a comfortable mask. At BreatheeasyCPAP.com, we are here to help you choose your system as well as provide you with the cleaning supplies you’ll need to make sure your investment in your health lasts.

Sleep Apnea Treatment: Only the Beginning

If your day to day life were a house, sleep would be the foundation. From the moment you wake, the quality of your sleep impacts every action you make. Sure, you can try to fill your day as happily and productively as possible, but if your sleep is lacking, you might as well be installing beautiful brick walls on top of broken stilts.

A few days ago, I had lunch with a friend who couldn’t say enough about the amazing changes in her life brought about by starting sleep apnea treatment.

“CPAP therapy has changed my life,” she said. “It’s like I started a chain reaction.”

As a health care professional, I knew it to be true. Having your sleep apnea treated is only the beginning of getting your health and your life back in working order.

There are pages and pages of evidence showing just how much of an impact sleep apnea treatment can make. First, you stop snoring. Your spouse sleeps better and you’re relationship is just the littlest bit easier. The continuous oxygen supplementation provided by your CPAP machine ends hypoxemia, the periods of oxygen deprivation you’ve been experiencing hundreds of times every night, meaning you’re waking up less often to starting breathing again.

“I’m sleeping through the night again, it’s amazing,” said my friend, adding one more word about her therapy.

Sleep Apnea Treatment Prevents Serious Illness

Sleep apnea treatment is the butt of a lot of jokes. From Modern Family to The Office CPAP masks can be found in great physical comedy acts. However, the awesome health benefits of treating your sleep apnea are no joke.

Untreated sleep apnea increases your risk for insulin resistance, the cause of Type 2 Diabetes. CPAP machine use helps prevent dramatic cardiovascular changes that lead to high blood pressure and stroke. CPAP therapy even helps protect against kidney disease and obesity.

Sleep Apnea and the Obesity Issue

Now, CPAP machines are not themselves weight loss regimens, and it would be dangerous to use them for this purpose alone. However, there is evidence that long term sleep apnea does lead to obesity. CPAP therapy improves sleep and this improved rest decreases insulin resistance occurrences and improves imbalanced hormones that could be contributing to your obesity. It’s hard to eat healthy and exercise when your sleep apnea is causing abnormal exhaustion every day! Since losing weight improves sleep apnea, we suggest that you try starting an exercise and diet routine once CPAP therapy has improved some of that daytime exhaustion.

Finding Your CPAP Machine

With hundreds of CPAP mask options, machine styles, and sleep apnea management accessories available, how are you to know where to start looking for your equipment? We suggest that you begin by asking your doctor to suggest the styles that they recommend for your individual treatment. Next, invest in a highly acclaimed and superior CPAP supply retailer. The health care professionals at BreatheeasyCPAP.com believe that comfortably treating sleep apnea can start a health and happiness chain reaction in your life. Stop by their online storefront today, I know you’ll like what you find.

Nasal Congestion and CPAP use

Nasal Congestion and CPAP use

Continuous positive airway pressure therapy is an important element to treating your sleep apnea and preventing associated long-term health risks like high blood pressure, diabetes, and renal disease. CPAP use will also help you get a better night’s sleep and help eliminate snoring as well as excessive fatigue. Despite the relief CPAP machines promote, users sometimes experience nasal congestion, which can result in frustration and disuse of their sleep apnea treatment.

Why Does CPAP Use Cause Nasal Congestion?

Overtime, forced air delivered through your CPAP mask is irritating to the mucosal lining of your nose. This causes swelling and excess mucous production, both of which contribute to nasal congestion. The irritation also creates an opportunity for infectious organisms to set up shop in your body leading to an even greater amount of both mucous and swelling! How are CPAP wearers supposed to continue their therapy if they’re struggling with a feed-back loop of irritation and nasal infections?

How is CPAP Related Nasal Congestion Treated?

It seems unfair to have such an irritating side effect getting in the way of your sleep apnea management. The good news is that there are ways to manage these frustrating experiences you might be having with congestion. First, have your primary health care provider check for an infection by taking a look at your nose, mouth, and ears. They will also listen to your lungs and prescribe antibiotics if considered necessary. If no infection is present, your doctor may have you take an oral steroid until the swelling in your nose decreases. To alleviate discomfort, check with you physician to see whether or not you would benefit from nasal decongestant regimen.

If you generally use a nasal mask for your CPAP treatment, you may want to switch over to a full face mask like the Amara View made by Philips Respironics while you’re suffering from a stuffed nose. A full face mask is the most accommodating when nasal congestion makes nasal breathing impossible.

If a full face mask is not available, you may try a short, one to two day break from continuous positive airway pressure use. Since the most serious effects of sleep apnea are developed over long periods of time, there is no evidence showing that a CPAP break would create imminent health problems.

CPAP Humidifiers Come Highly Recommended

The addition of a heated humidifier to your nasal CPAP system will moisten all delivered air and prevent the drying of the nose’s mucous membranes. This heated moist air decreases uncomfortable nasal symptoms and helps prevent infection. While we recommend most sleep apnea sufferers use a heated humidifier, studies show that the use of these devices are especially important of persons over sixty.

When using your humidifier, check the operating instructions for information on the best options for filling its tank. Some humidifiers are not compatible with tap water and must only be filled with distilled.

The nurses, respiratory therapists, and physicians at BreatheEasyCPAP.com believe that your sleep apnea treatment shouldn’t be sidelined because of nasal discomfort. Visit our site for your CPAP humidifiers and other devices; we promise that you’ll appreciate our attention to quality and practical pricing.

Does a Nightcap Help Me Sleep?

Does a Nightcap Help Me Sleep?

Far and wide people enjoy a drink or two before bed and hope for a good night’s rest. There seems to be a myth that drinking a few glasses of a favorite alcoholic beverage before bed will help you sleep better at night. Is there any truth to this old adage?

The Answer? Probably not. The fact of the matter seems to be that a few glasses of alcohol before bed actually decreases the amount and quality of sleep a person gets at night! Even more worrisome is that alcohol has an effect on breathing, and if you suffer from a sleep disordered condition like sleep apnea, this impact on your breathing is riskier than you may have considered.

Alcohol and R.E.M. Sleep

One of the ways alcohol use tricks you into thinking your sleep has improved rather than worsened is that after a few cocktails you fall into a deepsleep right away. The problem with this is that Rapid Eye Movement, or REM, occurs during the lighter stages of sleep. REM is important for learning, concentrating, and most forms of problem solving. A night or two of missed REM sleep and you won’t be able to think straight!

Alcohol also impacts the way in which our lungs function. The harshness of the chemical compound which makes up alcohol easily moves from the bloodstream into the lungs, which is why breathalyzers work so well to detect inebriation. This harshness, or volatility, creates inflammation and can cause more dramatic breathing problems in those with asthma or COPD.

Sleep Apnea and Alcohol Use: Too Risky?

ObstructiveSleep Apnea results from the intermittent obstruction of your airway during breathing. It can be caused by excess weight around the neck area, restrictive sleeping positions, chronic nasal or sinus issues and many other factors. On top of these, many of those suffering from sleep apnea have developed the condition because of alcohol use resulting in long-term inflammation.

When a person with sleep apnea uses alcohol, they’re taking a risk in two ways. First, alcohol impairs their already broken and diminished sleep. Pair this with the inability to attain R.E.M. during sleep and they’ll wake each morning feeling less able to concentrate and more exhausted than ever. And yet, there are greater, more immediate risks to sleep apnea sufferers who consume alcohol than the basic issue of sleep disturbance.

Alcohol use relaxes the muscles around your throat and also decreases your drive to breathe. If you suffer from sleep apnea, a relaxed throat can increasethe likelihood of throat collapse, potentiating, or promoting, airway obstruction. For these reasons, we here at Breatheeasycpap.com suggest that person’s with sleep apnea avoid drinking alcoholic beverages for fourhours before they try to fall asleep, or else risk worsening symptoms or even death.

Avoid Alcohol and Start CPAP Therapy

Not only do we wish to promote your sleep health by discouraging evening alcohol use, we suggest that you begin treating your sleep apnea as soon as possible following your diagnosis. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure therapy is the gold standard in the treatment of today’s sleep apnea sufferers. At Breatheeasycpap.com, you’ll find inexpensive and quality CPAP masks, tubing and hoses, along with CPAP machines to get your sleep back on track.

Healthy sleep is the cornerstone to living a flourishing life. Don’t delay taking whatever steps are necessary, such as avoiding alcohol or visiting your doctor, to promote robust sleep.

Epidemiologists, or those responsible for studying patterns of health conditions, say that chronic and secondary insomnia in adults is on the rise and is predicted to continue rising by 0.71% annually. A mountain of evidence is coming to light and showing that considerable use of these screened electronics is keeping people awake at night and contributing to the growing population of adults suffering from insomnia. This loss of sleep increases the risk of developing depression, an increase in overall stress levels, and even cardiovascular problems.

How Screens Impact Our Sleep

The stream of data taken in just before bed affects you negatively by keeping your brain focused on information processing, even when you think you’re just “decompressing.” Unnatural light created by screened devices may be the most damaging aspect of nighttime screen use. Normally, when the sun rises in the morning, the light hits the photoreceptors in the retinas signaling the brain to become alert and begin your days. When you introduce manufactured light in the evening, you confuse the natural circadian rhythm generally maintained by the rising and setting of the sun. Light hitting your eyes at night tells your brain to become active and prevents you from falling asleep. This disruption to your rest overtime can lead to long-term sleep problems, including insomnia. When technology is such an important part of our lives, how do you ensure that it does not prevent you from getting the sleep needed at night?

Plan Screen Free Time Each Evening

Disconnect from screened devices at least thirty minutes before bedtime. Decide what necessary screen-related tasks must be completed each evening, such as checking in with work or sending an important text, and try to perform them as early in the evening as possible. Find a place outside of your bedroom to charge your phone at night so that you won’t be disrupted by emails or messages while you sleep. If this is impossible, set up a white-list or “do not disturb” application on your smart-phone that only allows your emergency contacts to get in touch of you at night. If you decide to move your phone, use a real alarm clock to wake you up in the morning.

If Sleep Problems Persist

If you’re still have difficulty sleeping, consider seeing your primary health care provider. If you are experiencing frequent waking, dry mouth, or snoring, you may have sleep apnea, a serious condition that can lead to long term health problems. If you’re diagnosed with this condition, choose a quality Continuous Positive Airway Pressure system from a reliable CPAP supply company like breatheeasycpap.com. Their team of health care professionals and sales representatives are experienced in matching customers with the CPAP mask and system to treat their sleep apnea.
